Yet Another New Zombie Film On The Horizon!

I read recently a review of the book "The Forest of Hands and Teeth" and made a mental note to myself to make sure it receives some time. Carrie Ryan's seemingly unique zombie novel is en route to becoming a movie by Seven Star Pictures.

In a nutshell, the book takes place about 100 years after the zombie apocalypse. The story's main character, Mary, is a teenage girl living in a village surrounded by a chain-link fence. Contained within is the "Sisterhood", a religous group that controls every aspect of life in the town. Marriage, birth, and even death is controlled and planned by the Sisterhood. Outside of this fence lies the forest of hands and teeth. A threat Mary must face to escape her life inside the fence.
Read up! Click here to go to Amazon and read the reviews and an interview with author, Carrie Ryan. Click here to see the source of my info regarding the movie, Hollywoodcrush.com where there is also a brief interview with Carie Ryan regarding casting ideas.

World War Z - Disappointing News

The up-and-down news of the movie adaptation of Max Brooks' World War Z continues. The most recent news? Director Marc Forster is no longer directing!

This must-read novel NEEDS to be made as a movie. I'll keep taking the up-down news as long as it all ultimately makes for a better movie.

To be continued...

Q & A with Jon Heder About "Woke Up Dead"

Reuters India has an interview posted with Jon Heder. Heder talks about his new zombie comedy web series offering some insight as to what we can expect. Head over to Reuters to read the full interview.

Q: It seems like this is a zombie flick, only on the Web?
A: "It plays with the conventions of the zombie-horror genre. Drex doesn't believe he's a zombie, but his friends start to realize he may be as he has no heart rate, all his vital signs are gone, and he has this hunger for brains. So it's a tweak on the whole genre. It's not that horrific, although there are a few scenes that get pretty bloody."

Zombieland - More New Photos!

Well... "photo" would be a better headline. Or "picture". New Zombieland Picture! Nah... doesn't have the same umph. While I ponder my decision to rewrite the headline, check out this sweet new zombie screenshot brought to us by Shoot For The Head.

Ebay Saturday!

I know most of you have been in suspense all week to see what zombie-related Ebay auctions would be featured today. So get your PayPal accounts funded and have a look!

New Zombie Walk World Record!

The Fremont Outdoor Movie Festival now has the official honor of holding the Guiness World Record for participants in a zombie walk! News (and photo) comes from The Fremont Universe where they can proudly take claim for holding the largest zombie walk on the planet. The official tally? 3,894 zombies!

Woke Up Dead - Upcoming Zombie Web Series

Jon Heder of Napolean Dynamite fame will be bringing us an Internet show about being a zombie. The whole "webisodes" thing seems to be a trend we're seeing more of lately. Personally, I enjoy the antics of Dave Vader, Toy Break, Dr. Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog, and The Guild. Though, the last two I only watched when my wife bought the DVDs.

The series aptly titled Woke Up Dead is about a college student who wakes up one morning to the discovery that he is dead. Crackle.com will air the show of 20 episodes about five minutes long each.

Heder describes the show as being a thriller zombie comedy. Heder plays the new zombie who does not believe that he is dead. The comedy begins when his friends start to believe that he is, indeed, a zombie.

George Romero's Latest: Survival of the Living Dead

According to the press release of the Toronto Film Festival, the most recent creation from the Godfather of zombie films, George Romero, has an official title. Survival of the Living Dead contains yet more social commentary but still sounds like it will keep us on our toes.

Colonal Crocket, seen in Diary of the Dead, leads a group of soldiers to an island-based military outpost with hopes of survival. What they do not anticipate is arriving in the midst of a type of civil war. With one side feeling that all of the undead need to be exterminated and the other still living with them! Keeping loved ones in chains within their homes and with the living ends up not being such a great idea (who would've thought?).

Yes, More Left 4 Dead 2 News

You can take the title as being one with enthusiasm or sarcasm. Personally, I can't wait to play this game and find all new news interesting. But on the flip side, I'm sick of reporting about it. Personal feelings aside, here's some interesting information about some of the new infected we will be encountering courtesy of Game Spy.

It looks like we will encounter level-specific infected with this second installment in addition to the new boss infected. Let's talk about the boss infected. So far we know about the Charger who will ...well ...charge at your group of survivors hitting and splitting you up. We now also have news of the Spitter. The Spitter works in much the same way as the Smoker. Instead of lashing with his tongue, he will (you guessed it) spit at you. This acid-like spit will stick to the ground if it misses its target causing damage if a survivor walks over it.

So the level-specific common infected? We already know about the Hazmat Zombie seen in the Parish level. We now know that he's immune to any fire in the level. Newly introduced in the Swamp level are Mud Zombies that run around on all fours posing a challenge when there is water present.

New [REC]2 Image!

Posted on Shoot For The Head is a new image from the upcoming [REC]2. I can't wait. I was finally able to watch [REC] after being released and loved it. For anyone who hasn't seen it you're missing out. Don't let the disappointment of Quarantine keep you from checking out [REC].

If you haven't checked out the trailers I posted earlier, click here and go have a look. Oh, and my two cents on the new photo? Maybe it's not a ceiling-crawling zombie but rather the camera has somehow been flipped.

More Zombie Artistry

A short while ago, I featured some bookmarks created by Colby Blair. Well, his talents don't end with his skills on a computer. Take a look at this video he has on YouTube. I wish I had a fraction of his talent. Witness from start to finish, the making of The Gray Suit Zombie from Dawn of the Dead!

World War Z: New Movie News!

This news comes from Rabid Doll which they got from Bloody Disgusting who reported from an interview on Fangoria Radio. So check those links for the original info.
It looks like World War Z is still moving forward after reporting earlier that there would be some delays. Matthew Michael Carnahan ("The Kingdom," "State of Play") will be scripting the adaptation. This news comes from the book's author, Max Brooks, who also had this to say during the interview: “He’s one of Hollywood’s hot A-list writers, so if they went after him and paid him a mountain of gold, it definitely shows their confidence in this project.”

New Zombieland Stills

From Entertainment Weekly, enjoy these new screen shots from the upcomming Zombieland. Then head over to EW to view some teaser images from other movies.

Zombieland Poster

I almost didn't even bother posting this as the image is everywhere. But, I figured this is a zombie news blog and this is zombie news so I proably should. Besides, what if Zombies & Toys is your only outlet for zombie news? Yeah, right!

Anyhoo... here's the new movie one sheet for the upcoming zombie comedy, Zombieland!

Sweet Resident Evil Shirt

Not much to say about this one other than I found out about it at Waylou.com. Normal shirt on front and back but it has a zombie face on the inside that can help transform you into a key player in the game!

Dawn of the Dead - Free Download of Classic Board Game

This may not be new news, but it was just brought to my attention. Homepage Of The Dead has available for free download the original Dawn of the Dead board game. Available by clicking here. I'm probably late to the game, but homepage looks like an informative site that would be easy to kill some time on.

Haunting Kira

This post is a sort-of update and sort-of props. A fellow zombie fan I have been following on Twitter and one of my first readers, Teresa Fahs, is making a movie. Wait, it gets better. Dread Central just posted an article about said movie along with some words from Teresa herself.

Teresa is a special effects artist and can be found at gorify.com. Find out more about Teresa's upcoming movie, Haunting Kira, here. You can also find out how you can buy a producer credit and be featured in the film's credits as-well-as on IMDB.com!

So, cheers to Teresa and gorify.com!

Jim Horwat's Movie Illustrations

Our friend, Andy, sent another link to something we may all find entertaining. SlashFilm.com posted a feature about artist Jim Horwat and his movie illustrations. There are several over there including Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, The Goonies, and (my favorite) The Big Lebowski. Jim's art prints are available to purchase by visiting his sight, here.

Why am I posting this? Two of Jim's interpretations are of The Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2 films. So, "thanks" and some swag go out to Andy for the heads-up!

New Zombie Movie Announced - "Gatekeeper"

Empire Online has just posted news about another upcoming zombie film, Gatekeeper. Starring Judge Reinhold, Lea Thompson, and Ron Pearlman, Gatekeeper is being said to be the Americanized Shaun of the Dead. We mentioned Pearlman in another zombie-featured film, I Sell the Dead, in a previous post. Circle of Confusion is the production company.

Now, I love zombies and zombie movies but I think it's a mistake to already make comparisons to Shaun of the Dead. And what needs 'Americanized' with Shaun anyway? I love hearing the ramblings when I read these announcements of people sick of zombies. I see their point as the past few years have been chock full 'o zombies, but I don't think you can have too much zombie goodness!

From the Empire site:

"We're told that the film is a zombie thriller, which producer Stephen Emery says will be "in the vein of 'Shaun of the Dead' for American audiences" - a laudable aim, at least. We're told that "a simple mistake" leaves three friends to defend their town from a zombie outbreak, in a script written and set to be directed by Isaac Meisenheimer."

New Left 4 Dead 2 Campaign Revealed

Left 4 Dead 2. I think this gets mentioned more than anything else around here so I'll apologize if you're sick of hearing about it. However, I don't make the news just report it. With that said, a new screenshot of the second announced campaign has been released. The first announced campaign was "The Parrish" and this second is "Swamp Fever". It was also said that the AI Director will have control over the weather elements making the rain and sun unpredictable.

Ebay Saturday!

We're back with another offering after taking last Saturday, July 4th, off from our usual Saturday post. So sit back and enjoy some Saturday Ebay zombie goodness!

Sideshow Collectibles' Premium Format Patient Zero

Sideshow Collectibles does it again. They are one of the most consistent companies out there when it comes to releasing a quality collectible. I know I’ve commented before about their in-house line of unique zombie collectibles appropriately titled The Dead. As a matter-of-fact, Sideshow’s The Dead line made my list of the top 5 zombie toys. If you want to know where they placed, head over to Zombie Command where my article is posted.

What I have lined up for review today is the premiere release of their Premium Format zombie. Patient Zero shares the same name as Sideshow’s initial 12” offering and it has not been disclosed if and how many Premium Format zombies will follow. With an edition size of only 300, Patient Zero was not available to order for very long. And count your blessings if you were fortunate enough to secure one of the only 100 Sideshow exclusive ones. The exclusive edition has a dismembered hand that Patient Zero can carry with him. Because you never know when you’re going to need a snack.

Sideshow’s Premium Format series of collectibles are ¼ scale, painstakingly detailed, and breath-taking to view. So what we have is an 18 inch blood-soaked zombie toy. I use the word “toy” loosely; Patient Zero is a real cloth clothing covered statue.

The pose is dynamic but not overly so. With one arm reaching out for what I would presume to be his next victim, this statue captures just enough movement for a zombie. His foot is also in position to clumsily move him towards the prize. This movement will bring me to my first detail: the front outside of his right shoe is worn and torn with popped stitching. A detail that’s easy to miss given its location but once noticed gives the indication that poor Patient Zero has been lumbering around for quite some time. To add to this assumption are the frayed ends of his pant legs.

They say the clothes make the man and they are certainly an important detail here as well. It’s hard to pull off real clothes on a collectible and the majority of the time they just don’t look right. Buttons are usually too large, the clothes are stiff and don’t necessarily fit like they would on an actual person, and stitching never looks appropriately scaled. I’m happy to say Sideshow manages to work past any of these flaws. Buttons, stitching, type of materials used, belt loops, pockets, folds, tears, frays… all are spot-on. Even the blood stains are realistic looking with deep reds in the center with the color fading as it is absorbed into the shirt material. Another amazing detail is an unnoticeable wire that runs through the bottom and front seams of the shirt. This allows you to adjust the amount of action you want him to display.

The sculpting and paint applications are just as amazing. Wrinkles and folds of skin, exposed inner flesh, stains on teeth, details on his hands, all of them combine to create one of the most realistic collectibles I have seen. Even the base has details in just the right spots with small spatterings of blood where they would have dripped off of his dangling hand. The eyes have a white glaze over them effectively ghosting his baby blues. Patient Zero’s tongue is even contorted behind his imperfectly twisted teeth in such detail you can almost hear his moaning. Moaning because he saw his own price tag of $275.
