Dead Island Super Review

David Brown

If you are an avid reader of the site, you will no doubt remember all of the fun coverage that we have had in regards to a little game by the name of Dead Island. We have brought you story points, videos, character info and even preorder bonus information. Now that the game is out none of that really matters. The one big question on everyone’s mind is whether or not the game is fun and worth the price of admission?

Before I get too far into this review let me make a few points. First, I played this game on the Xbox360 so there will be some differences in the quality from the PC or PS3 versions. I am also playing a version that has been updated with all of the latest patches, so a lot of the initial issues being reported have been fixed for the most part. I am also for the sake of this review going to be bypassing the online portion of the game in order to give you a more streamlined review.

Dead Island is ultimately what you make of it. Before you start to play it don’t think that this is going to be another Dead Rising or Left 4 Dead clone. Dead Island is ultimately a mix between action and RPG elements but more on this later. When you begin the game you are greeted by a cut-scene where you see the night when all hell breaks loose on the island, to the song “Who Do You Voodoo”. This scene does a good job of showing you all of the characters that you will soon be able to play as. The graphics in this scene do a good job of setting you up for what you will see throughout the game.

After the cut-scene you are taken to the character selection scene where you are able to choose between four different characters. You choice on this screen will help determine the way you will play and the weapons that you will best be able to utilize. Upon selecting your character you are placed in the resort hotel and the gameplay begins. You are introduced to the basic controls and then out of nowhere the infected attack and you are forced to flee. You are unprotected the whole time, so it is definitely a great moment when you first get to pick up a weapon and help fight off the infected.

The first question you are probably asking is how does the game control? There are two control methods to choose from: digital or analog. With the digital controls you utilize the right trigger to swing your weapon, whereas with the analog controls your swings coincide with your movements on the right analog stick. Most of my playtime was spent with the digital controls and I had no complaints. Controls seemed very responsive and I was able to hit all body parts that I was targeting when using either control option.

If there is one thing that this game excels at it is creating an atmosphere coherent with that of a great horror movie. There are many moments where you will be scared when an infected islander latches on to you and you must fight to free yourself from their grasp. The moment when you are going into a building or down a path and hear the moan of the infected is truly a nerve racking one indeed. Speaking of the infected, they come in both slow and fast varieties as well as a few special ones strewn about that truly make for some nerve racking situations.

Dead Island airs on the side of realism by utilizing a stamina system that many will find annoying at first (that is until you realize that kicking doesn’t use stamina). The weapons you pick up also have to be constantly repaired or they will break and you will be left to use your bare hands to take down the infected. These are a few minor annoyances that will serve to aggravate you until you can learn the intricacies of the game. One annoyance for many will be the respawn system. When you die you do not have to reload a checkpoint, you just lose money and are respawned near the point of your death with full health. The issue begins when you realize that you are left with weapons that have been used and may be unhelpful.

Another nice touch to the game is its leveling system. You gain experience as you kill the infected and complete quests so there is always something to do to ever push you forward. As you gain a level you not only get more life and stamina but you also get to select special skills from one of three categories to level up. There is a certain degree of grinding if you want to reach level 50, but there is always enough to keep you busy and entertained whether it be slicing through the infected with a customized machete or running through them with a reinforced vehicle.

The cut-scenes in the game are quite good, but there are minor graphical glitches from time to time. You will sometimes see a zombie stuck in a wall or clipping through a door. You will also notice that with your characters the kicking animations seem a bit off. Draw distances are sometimes off too resulting in graphics not fully rendering right away or having mountains pop-up out of nowhere. These are minor issues, but is one that needed to be touched upon There is also a bit of an issue where you will be playing by yourself one minute and then joined mysteriously by the other three characters during in game cut-scenes.

Overall this is a great game. Many of the glitches that occurred during the initial release have been patched to the point where they are no longer issues. To get the most out of this game you must go into it looking at it as an adventure game. You will be going through the game having to plan your kills and sometimes run from fights. Dead Island is a game where the simple run and gun will no longer work. You will find 20+ hours of fun killing the infected, crafting weapons, helping survivors and trying to survive your stay on the island. If you enjoy a good adventure game and the feeling of needing to survive at all costs then run out and pick up this game. Dead Island will make a great addition to the library of anyone with a PS3, XBOX360 or PC.

LEFT 4 DEAD: Pre-outbreak video

If a picture is worth a thousand words, what's a new youtube video teaser for the Left4Dead movie worth?

Tucker and Dale vs Evil

Todd Jepperson

TUCKER & DALE VS EVIL is a hilariously gory, good-spirited horror comedy, doing for killer rednecks what Shaun of the Dead did for zombies. Tucker and Dale are two best friends on vacation at their dilapidated mountain house, who are mistaken for murderous backwoods hillbillies by a group of obnoxious, preppy college kids. When one of the students gets separated from her friends, the boys try to lend a hand, but as the misunderstanding grows, so does the body count.

TUCKER AND DALE VS EVIL has been a hit on the festival circuit, debuting at Sundance, and winning the Midnight Audience Award at SXSW, the Jury Prize for First Feature at Fantasia, the Best Director award at Fantaspoa, and the Best Motion Picture Award at Sitges.

Available On Demand everywhere now and coming to select theaters this Friday, September 30th. Enjoy the images and Red Band trailer below:

Evil gets high - Do remastered versions of Capcom classics require revisiting?

Over fifteen years ago, the world was rocked and rotted by Capcom’s record shattering Resident Evil series. Putting gamers in the nerve-shattering world of survival horror, Resident Evil saw more longevity with its later sequels of Resident Evil 4 (RE:4) and Resident Evil: Code Veronica (RE:CV.) RE:4 blew gamers away with its birth on the Nintendo GameCube, its amazing graphics, re-focused game play and bad ass upgrade of Leon Kennedy. Code Veronica was a fan favorite for the PS2 which continued Claire Redfield’s journey for her lost brother. For reasons both different and alike, the games were loved in the past. Now, they have been released in high definition for modern consoles and it’s a worthwhile question to ask: are they worth buying?

The stories for both games are the same. Nothing has changed. Only in RE:4 have additional mini-games been added from previous versions. While they both wave the banner of new and improved graphics, this can be a con. There is something to be said about the issue that remastering can showcase old graphics that didn’t keep up. RE:4 does not suffer from this because its looks were ahead of its time. Code Veronica looks very dated on the new consoles and in HD.

The other area where the games struggle is control. It is difficult playing both games with the Xbox 360 controller layout. RE:4 will leave gamers a prone to cheap shot as looking behind you is not the same as turning around. RE:CV will leave players walking into walls and falling to cut corners as flaming zombies come their way.

Zombies?
While many argue that RE:4 did not feature true zombies, it gets damn close with the hordes that hound you through the game. Code Veronica truly does send undead everything your way. Fans of the series will find adding these two downloads as good additions to their gaming gallery. Is the price somewhat high? Possibly. Are the games worth playing? For the die-hards, definitely. For visitors to Raccoon City, being a permanent resident may not be necessary.

The Dead Invades US Shores This October

Matt Boiselle

After a very successful theatrical run earlier this year in the U.K., Global Cinema Distribution is proud to announce that The Ford Brothers zombie-action thriller, The Dead will be making its North American debut in 20 cities beginning with Los Angeles on October 7th, then followed by a wider release on October 14 starting with New York City and all points in between.

Centering on the aftermath of a global zombie outbreak, this movie was filmed in the harshest African regions of Burkina Faso and Ghana and focuses on an American mercenary that has just survived a horrific plane crash and his quest to stay alive amidst rampaging hordes of the undead. He soon thereafter meets up with an African soldier who is searching for his lost son, and it isn't long before the two are fighting side by side against mass quantities of blood-thirsty flesh eaters.

Shot on 35mm film, this movie has already gained nationwide acclaim in the UK for its brutality and edge-of your-seat storyline. Make sure you search out the trailer and hopefully if you live in a major city, you too will be able to partake in some good old fashioned zombie madness this October.

 - Just a little update - after writing this info I did some searching and found out that the movie will be available on DVD and Blu-Ray this October 10th!

April A. Taylor takes you on a tour of “Dark Europe”

Dan Barkasi

To our loyal followers, I’m sure that you remember a wonderful photographer named April A. Taylor, of which we have featured in the past. Her line of “Dark Art” photographs are some of the best artistic pictures that we here have seen in a very long time, and she now has a new set of location-themed images to share with us. Believe me, they’re out of this world!

The series is titled “Dark Europe,” and it features shots from haunting locations within Paris, France and London, England.

Locations include an abandoned church in Abney Cemetery, skulls in the catacombs of Paris, beautiful sculptures of gargoyles, among others.

April’s niche of finding the most haunting and surreal places to shoot are second to none, and her execution of her art is breathtaking. The attention to detail is brilliant, with every photo containing its own unique story. It’s certainly worth a look, and if you like them as much as yours truly, ordering a print may be a good notion!

Check out this series here. You won’t be disappointed!

April has also compiled a video that features some of her best work, along with quotes regarding such from many in the realm of horror. It’s quite cool, and you can check it out here.

Stag Night of The Dead Coming Soon

Matt Boiselle

Releasing on ITunes and on DVD in the U.K. this January 9th comes a new take on the Zombie genre. In " Stag Night of the Dead", we follow a close group of friends and a very voluptuous stripper heading to a run-down military base for what can only be called as the greatest stag party experience known to man. I mean think about it, what could be better than to gather up a bunch of your best buds, strap yourselves up with pulse stun guns, and unleash hell on the undead ?( I'm not quite sure where the stripper fits in.... but who am I to complain ?) In the movie, the group seems to be enjoying their game of "zomball", until the cardinal rule is broken, and that rule is " never humiliate a zombie". After the rule is ignored, I'm sure you can guess what happens soon after. All in all this movie promises to deliver a fresh new take on the zombie movie dynamic, so make sure to check out the trailer for this survival comedy and who knows, after the apocalypse does occur, we could all be meeting up to play ourselves a game of " Zomball".

Deadliest Warrior Sneak Peek

Todd Jepperson

Remember a while back, when we reported Spike TV's Deadliest Warrior season three finale? Today they released a little preview video which, to me, shows that they considered this thing from the right angle. The vampire is pretty well armed, but the Zombies aren't trying to take him on alone.

A Zombie's Gotta Eat

Todd Jepperson

A meal on-the-go takes on a whole new meaning when you put it in the context of the undead. Usain Bolt is fast food, and Jason Alexander. . . well, he’s more the dine-in type. For those of us with functioning circulatory systems, there’s Zombie Burger; open for lunch dinner and late-night dining, ZOMBIE BURGER + DRINK LAB features something for everyone (still living.)

Located at 300 East Grand Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa, Zombie Burger really does have everything. Start your meal off with a light appetizer, such as Fried Pickle chips, or Zombie Nachos (flour tortilla chips, adobe shredded pork, tomato, cheddar cheese, guacamole, salsa, and pico de gallo.) When you’re serious about getting your eat on, grab one of their goreMet bashed burgers: the Zombie Burger, East Village of the Damned, Dead Moines, The Walking Ched, 28 Days Later, or even George Romero’s Pittsburgher.

Man I wish I was in Iowa right now.

BEDBUGS: A Novel

Todd Jepperson

What does a person do when the perfect marriage, perfect home, and perfect life are turned upside-down by the tiniest of problems? What if that problem isn’t even apparent to anyone but you? How does a woman look her husband in the eye, a man who has given up nearly everything for her, and tell him it’s not enough? Welcome to first round of Susan Wendt’s trials; and they’re only beginning.

BEDBUGS is the latest release from Quirk Books and author Ben H. Winters. In the novel, Susan is confronted with the physical and psychological implications of dealing with thousands of tiny parasitic insects and the impious circumstances of their arrival.

From the press release:

Meet Alex and Susan Wendt. They are the perfect couple in search of the perfect brownstone—and they find their dream house in the heart of Brooklyn Heights. Sure, the landlady is a little eccentric, and the handyman drops some cryptic remarks about the previous tenants. But the rent is so low; it’s too good to pass up!

Big mistake: Susan soon discovers that the brownstone is teeming with bedbugs—or is it? She awakens every morning with fresh bites, but neither Alex nor their daughter Emma has a single welt. Exterminators search the property and turn up nothing. The landlady insists the building is clean. Susan fears that she's going mad—but as the mystery deepens, a more sinister explanation presents itself: She may literally be confronting the bedbug problem from Hell.

You may think that a psychological thriller slash horror novel centered around a bunch of bugs may be a little simple; but let me assure you, BEDBUGS delivers. I read this book over a week of vacation with my family along the east coast of Florida. Going from hotel room to hotel room sleeping in a different bed every night and reading about cimex lectularius definitely got into my head. I found myself checking sheets for spots and moltings more than once; no lie.

Ben’s characters are, for the most part, very human; the exception being Alex, Susan’s husband, who I felt didn’t have a whole lot of depth. However, let me quickly say that I think it added to the reader experience of the book. The supporting cast does just that; they support the protagonist. The novel is really about Susan, and her isolated journey through hell.

The first half of the book takes its time and gives you a cozy feeling. The family really does have it all. Alex is successful at what he does allowing Susan to pursue her true passion, which is art. Their daughter, Emma, is healthy and happy, and even Marni the nanny has found her place with them. Susan convinces Alex to move from their cramped little apartment in a less-than-ideal part of town to a wonderful place in Brooklyn Heights. The rent is a little more than they’re used to; but so much less than they expected. It even had a ‘bonus’ bonus room which she could turn into a painting studio.

Then we meet Andrea, the strangely loving and warm landlady and Louis, her handyman. The family grows accustomed to her slightly intrusive ways as they get to know her and her sympathetic situation. The last tenants ran out and left her stranded, her husband recently passed away, and she’s getting too feeble to take good care of herself.

That’s where the story really gets going. Susan starts to hear rumors of a sort of local epidemic of bedbugs driving people to leave the area. She asks around a little, and Andrea assures her there have never been any problems. Shortly after, a brutal local tragedy strikes too close to home, and Susan’s mental rollercoaster begins its downward spiral. First, something isn’t quite right about her art. Then, she gets an unsettling pattern of welts. Soon after, nightmares follow; leading into a full on badbug infestation.

This book is well worth the read for nearly anyone; middle grade through adults. There are mild, if any, sexual references, scenes of horror/violence, and occasional language (yes, the "F" word shows up here and there.) The author has done a great job of writing a PG-13 level novel without making it feel odd or forced. Word choices like “dude” and frequent references to modern conveniences like iPhones, definitely make this feel like a twenty-first century read. Also, at 256 pages, once the narrative gets moving, there’s no room to slow down. The plot-twist ending will wrap the story up nicely which will leave you satisfied . . . and possibly a little more paranoid about where you sleep.

We were also lucky enough to be able to ask Ben a few questions about the book. Continue reading to see our questions and his responses.

First, there is a lot of great New York imagery in the book which makes me wonder, where are you from?

I’m actually from Maryland, originally, and I currently live in the Boston area, but I did spend many years living in Downtown Brooklyn, pretty close to where my protagonist lives in Bedbugs. It’s a wonderful place, not only physically beautiful -- with the bridge and the parks and the view of the Manhattan skyline and so on -- but also with a vast range of fascinating people, from the from old hardcore Brooklynites tucked away in their ancient brownstones, to the too-cool-for-school hipsters drinking espressos in the coffee shops, to young parents pushing their strollers to the playground. I tried to make the Brooklyn of the book like the one I know and love. Except the one in the book is a lot creepier.

Your other work, which I’m familiar with, is Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters. Have you always been into Horror, or is this new territory for you?

Sure, I’ve always loved horror, though I never went in much for the spooky-dude-running-around-with-a-chainsaw kind of stuff. As for Bedbugs, I like to see it in the tradition of a certain kind of “psychological” horror novel, where the line is forever shifting between what is real and what is imagined, and the hero’s paranoia and anxiety are as tormenting as anything that may or may not be hiding in the closet. The Turn of the Screw, Rosemary’s Baby, and even The Yellow Wallpaper were big influences.
My earliest experience with horror, that I remember, was an episode of some kind of short-lived Twilight-Zone-ripoff type show, where some criminal ends up buried alive. I remember nothing about that episode, except that A) someone got buried alive, and B) it scared the hell out of me.

Would you mind sharing a little bit of your writing process? Does writing come naturally to you, or are you simply human like the rest of us?

My writing process is pretty standard. I light scented candles, descend into a trance state, and pray to the great goddess Isis that she may guide my pen.
Just kidding. I drink a lot of coffee, scrawl notes on index cards, and force myself to keep going until I get to the end.

I’ve gotta say, as much sense as thousands of tiny, parasitic beetles make for horror I never would have come up with BEDBUGS myself. You’ve got probably one of the most creatively unique ideas I’ve ever read. How did this story come to you? Why bed bugs?

Bedbugs just seemed like the perfect subject for a contemporary horror novel. Like all the great bogeys, the threat of them -- the mere possibility of them -- is at least as scary as the reality. You hear tales of bedbugs that ended leases, that destroyed relationships, that shut down thriving furniture stores. It’s like a modern-day plague, as much because people are freaked out by the things than because of anything they actually do. So when my editor and I set out to update the perfect-young-couple-finds-the-perfect-apartment subgenre, it was like, forget the haunted Native American burial ground, let’s give these poor suckers some bedbugs.

So, we have BEDBUGS the novel; is anyone writing the screenplay? Will we ever be able to see BEDBUGS the movie?

Well, of course I think it would be a terrific movie, and budget-conscious producers should take note: the cast is just six adults and one child. Plus hundreds of thousands of cimex lectularius, of course, but they’re non-union.

Lastly, do you have any projects on the horizon that we and our readers can look forward to?

I actually have a sideline, believe it or not, in books for young readers, and I have a middle-grade novel called The Mystery of the Missing Everything coming out in a few weeks. At present I’m wrestling with a very odd detective novel, which, if all goes well, will be out at some point next year.

Thanks, Ben for your book and taking the time to talk to us here at Zombies and Toys.

To enter the contests, please email your name and address to the addresses provided.

The first zombie we are treated to is a young girl with bunny slippers... and part of her face missing.  While gruesome and ominous, the young actress behind the make-up is far from.  Addy Miller has been featured here several times in the past and is an absoulte delight to speak with.  To win your choice of a signed picture, email your info to addy@zombiesandtoys.com.

Who would've ever thought that a zombie would elicit compassion from the living?  Melissa Cowan as the Bicycle Zombie touched a nerve with Rick Grimes.  Email melissa@zombiesandtoys.com to have those eyes looking at you every day.

Many fans have been cheering for Chandler Riggs and his portrayal of Carl Grimes.  Carl is one of the most pivotal characters in the books and I was excited to have the opportunity to speak to Chandler.  Humble and polite, I instantly understood why he was cast to play they young Grimes.  Don't miss an opportnity to meet Chandler if the opportunity presents itself.  Email your info to chandler@zombiesandtoys.com for your chance to win a photo.

Keisha Tillis played a wife as well, only a rotting, shambling dead one.  Mother of Duane and wife of Morgan, she is left to torment them with her presence.  Send your info to keisha@zombiesandtoys.com for your chance to win one of her photos.

Another delightful young man we have had the pleasure of meeting is Adrian Kali Turner.  Adrian played Duane whom we mentioned above.  Email us at adrian@zombiesandtoys.com to be entered to win one of his photos.

Fellow survivors in The Walking Dead are sometimes a rareity.  Anthony Guajardo played Miguel, a pivotal character in the Vatos episode.  Send your info to anthony@zombiesandtoys.com for your chance to win.

We will choose winners at the end of this month.  It may be a process to organize all of the winners' pictures, so be patient with us if you are selected as a winner.  But, we'll do our best to have your pictures in-hand by the time season 2 premiers!

Pray for Daylight

Todd Jepperson

Back in March of this year, we told you about a folk style zombie album by Aaron Stoquert called, “Run for Your Life" (link.) Well, here we are a few months later and we’re serving up another helping of soul food. Let me introduce to you, the musical styling of Chris Kiehne and his album Pray for Daylight.

This hauntingly upbeat EP contains a wonderful mix of sounds akin to those of musical greats like Van Morrison, Tom Waits, and Bob Dylan; whom the artist has drawn inspiration from. Chris told us that he tuned his sound after the three of these artists because, “all three know how to write a damn good melody.” Let me add in here, that Mr. Kiehne doesn’t do a half bad job himself.

When asked about the album, Chris had this to say:

I’m proud of it. I’ve always felt that the particular element of zombie films that really elevates the sub-genre is that first moment of transfiguration, where a character first ceases to be him/herself and commences being something other. It’s a really profound moment, in my mind, insofar as it represents the simultaneous presence of polar opposites, which is otherwise a practical impossibility. You’re standing there, watching your wife rise up from a pile of dirt, and she is right then two opposing things: she is both her and not her, alive and dead. She doesn't stop being herself just because she isn't herself: you're looking at her. You can see her. It's her, it's your wife. It’s a debilitating situation and demands really devastating moral decisions . . . So the album is about, basically, trying to survive a zombie epidemic and protect your lover when you know full well that she’s already been bitten.

The best part about the album isn’t even that it’s free, which it is if you go here. After you download, you’ll wanna give a listen to Sister Black Maria and Basket of Bone, which are probably my favorite two tracks.

As far as presenting the horror subtheme in his music, Chris credits films such as Return of the Living Dead and Cemetery man. His dystopia has also been brightened a little by Shaun of the Dead. “That's the overall best damn zombie movie ever made,” he told me.
