Quirk Books is back this month offering Zombies & Toys' readers the opportunity to win some free books! Pride and Prejudice and Zombies has spawned a sequel and a prequal and you have the opportunity to win them both! Below, you can read our review of Dredfully Ever After and follow the directions to win a copy.
A little over two years ago Seth Grahame-Smith took a piece of literary history and put his own spin on it by taking the common themes of the original and the story and adding a healthy dose of ninjas, guns and of course zombies. It was a smash hit, to put it lightly, with releases worldwide. Grahame-Smith did Pride and Prejudice proper justice with the inclusion of the things listed above. It was a great book that only had the downfall of conserving a lot of the old English that is sometimes off-putting to the casual reader.
A year later Steve Hockensmith took over the reins with Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Dawn of the Dreadfuls, a prequel to the smash hit that looked at the upbringing of the sisters and the origins of many events and characters. Hockensmith has a bigger sense of freedom, but was still confined by the story arcs that he had to write into for the proper story arcs to be maintained. Now one year later, Hockensmith is back with a sequel to the original Pride and Prejudice and Zombies in the form of Dreadfully Ever After.
Dreadfully Ever After picks once again with our main characters Elizabeth Darcy and Fitzwilliam Darcy. Elizabeth is markedly reserved and quite docile in married life as she is no longer allowed to carry a weapon openly or fight zombies. With a marriage that seems to have fallen into a state of settling, Darcy asks Elizabeth to take a stroll so they can reclaim the old feelings they once shared. On the stroll however, Darcy is bitten by a dreadful and infected. This is where our story begins.
From here the story reintroduces Darcy’s Aunt, Lady Catherine de Bourgh, who holds a serum that will help slow the infection slowly spreading within Darcy. The serum will give Elizabeth valuable time to find a rumored cure in London as per Lady Catherine’s instructions. On her journey, Elizabeth is joined by her father and sister Kitty, along with another sister Mary Bennet.
Our story revolves around the concept of stories within stories as we switch between the views of Darcy as he struggles to survive at his Aunt’s estate and Elizabeth as she makes her journey into and through London. The backdrop of Regency England continues to preserve an interesting backdrop for a surprising quick read. The book as stated earlier switches between two views that are seemingly different in their style. The Darcy scenes seem a bit slow paced while the Elizabeth scenes in London seem much livelier. The best part about a lot of this, especially in the London scenes is that we don’t just focus on one character. In many parts we are also focusing on Darcy’s cousin Anne and Elizabeth’s sisters Kitty and Mary.
The book maintains a great deal of humor and romance along with a nice touch of action to help move the story along. Along with all of this, there are some interesting new characters that you will find being introduced. As stated before, nothing ever feels too slow as the pacing in this book is surprising fact. There are even some loose ends that are wrapped up from the Pride and Prejudice and Zombies series. If you are a fan of the original books then by all means pick this book up, as it is an interesting swan song for the series. If you are looking for a fun read and haven’t read the other books I would still recommend this as Hockensmith does a great job helping this story stand out on its own by providing enough back information.
If you are still on the fence then Quirk Books has created a great trailer for the book. Do yourself a favor and make sure you go to the Dreadfully Ever After Facebook page as well for more information and some very special contests and giveaways that are open to you if you like the page. Speaking of... email your name and address to dea@zombiesandtoys.com for your chance to win a copy. Winners will be selected May 31st.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops

New Zombies Map “Call Of The Dead”
Anyone who has played the latest iteration of the Call Of Duty series knows that one of the best features is the Zombies mode. On May 3rd a new map will be available as a part of the Escalation Downloadable Content (DLC) for Xbox 360 as a timed exclusive (PS3 and PC to come later). A special flavor added to the map is that it features some pretty well known faces. Robert Englund, Danny Trejo, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Michael Rooker and George Romero are featured in this zombie-filled bullet fest.
Below is the slick trailer introducing what will probably be the best part of the DLC map pack. Five maps comprise the pack (4 regular and 1 zombies) and it will cost 1200 Microsoft Points ($15). Hope to see you on the battlefield!

Zombie Ohio: A Tale Of The Undead
Andy Ross
Imagine that you wake up on the ground to find out that you were flung from your vehicle in an accident. Now factor in some amnesia coupled with a world plagued with walking corpses. Sound like a fun time? Hardly. The cherry on top of this undead sundae is that you are no longer living, but have become a walking, talking, thinking and (non) breathing zombie. This is the current “life” crisis of Peter Mellor when Zombie Ohio begins.
What do you do? Where do you go? How long until the higher functions cease and you fall as far as the rest of your zombie brethren? These are the worries Peter shares with us as he seeks out his loved ones and avoids those who wish to make his dying a little more permanent. Peter’s journey takes a turn for the unexpected when he finds that his car accident wasn’t quite an accident after all. With a new focus, Peter is determined to use his zombie status to his advantage in tracking down his murderer.
Scott Kenemore presents the tale of Peter Mellor in an interesting way. A zombie capable of speech and rational thought? Peter’s ability to function on a higher level opens many doors for his survival in the undead infested lands of Ohio. As he comes to grips with his newfound abilities and desires we get the inside scoop of what it feels like. Remember your first…anything? We get a first hand account of a multitude of zombie firsts by walking along side Peter.
The mixture of zombie horror and murder mystery makes for a compelling read. Humor is in no short supply and offsets the grisly reality that the human race is no match for the zombie armies that walk the earth. Peter’s world view and outlook on humanity make for a very likeable character with whom to take a journey. A zombie that elicits empathy? Largely unheard of, but there will be some that root for Peter as he goes through the motions of trying to remember clues that could lead him to his murder (all while stopping for the occasional brain snack).
Do yourself a favor, pick up the book and take a journey with quite possibly the smartest zombie you will ever meet. The book is a quick read, but there are enough instances of symbolism and little gems throughout that will bring you back for another visit to the zombie infested state of Ohio (is there really any other reason to come to Ohio)? Come for the brains, stay for the fun!
For your chance to win one of several copies of the book, email your name and address to ohio@zombiesandtoys.com. We will select winners at random May 31st.

The War is Back On
Todd Jepperson
It wasn’t too long ago we told you about Brad Pitt taking an interest in the film adaptaion of Max Brooks’ World War Z. In short, he bought up rights, and started peddling it to Big Hollywood production companies. Conflicting reports and rumors have been spinning almost out of control since then, but we think there are some actual developments to report.
First, Paramount Studio axed the project because of funding. Apparently, they didn’t have the, roughly, $125,000,000 kicking around between the sofa cushions to bring this thing to theaters the way it was. They even threatened to re-write it as a PG-13 script if they couldn’t get someone to help foot the bill. Luckily Skydance Productions, as well as “unnamed” others, have come forward and offered to lend a hand and filming could begin as soon as June.
Now that we have funding, we need to figure out who’s gonna film the thing. Until further notice, Robert Richardson has been called up to take care of it. Being that he’s been the lead man on films such as Natural Born Killers (1994), Kill Bill vol. 1 and 2 (2003-04), Inglorious Basterds (2009), and his current project Hugo Cabaret, we can probably breathe easy knowing he’s on the job.
Next, we need to begin casting. Round 1 has apparently already happened, bringing in a couple of familiar faces. Obviously, Brad Pitt is in and we all know who he is, but Pitt’s agreed to co-star alongside AMC’s The Killing’s Mireille Enos.
The latest reports have this thing filming this year with an early summer 2012 release, but as you can come to count on from the City of Fallen Angels, these things will probably change. We’ll try to stay on top of it and let you know when they do.

Wanna Be a Zombie?
Todd Jepperson
Axe and Knife is a Zombie short set to film in Flint—I’m assuming Michigan—sometime soon and they’re having an open casting call for all wannabe post-mortem prowlers. Details on the film are really few and far between as of right now, but all you need to enlist in the army of undead extras is a head to photograph (your own, preferably) and a description of yourself.
What do you think? Wanna have a walk-on as one of the hungry dead? Head on over to AxeandKnife.com and follow the screams to the casting page. At the bottom, you’ll find a link to the email where you can drop your entry. As always, if you land the role, let us know (todd@zombiesandtoys.com). We’d love to hear about it.

Can We Just Wait It Out?
Todd Jepperson
I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I’ve run through the zombie outbreak. Sometimes it’s just in my head while I’m slaving away for The Man; other times it’s just after waking from a kick-ass Zombie dream; and other times it’s full scale with a supply list, a map, and a specific objective in mind. Every time, though, there’s at least a small block that includes, “bunker down and wait it out”.
But, how long can you wait out the end of the world? Maybe someone will find a cure; maybe even before you take a taste test down memory lane, but who knows? Maybe you’ll be forced to spend the entire rest of your life hiding in a cellar doing your best to avoid being on the menu. Maybe it will never happen; but, maybe it will.
Over on the Zombie Research Society Blog, Jack the Intern is putting his body to the test; he’s going as long as possible without one bite of food. He’s got plenty of water and he’s not in any real physical danger, but he is definitely hungry.
“In Jack’s zombie survival situation he is stuck in a safe place with plenty of water but nothing else. He must wait out the zombie horde at his door in hopes of either being rescued or developing a workable escape plan. Meanwhile he has to work every day to solidify his defenses and scavenge the area, so he will not be allowed to sit around and do nothing.”
Today, Jack’s on day three of his Zombie survival challenge and is down six pounds. How far will he go? Follow his ‘tweets’ on the ZRS feed and see for yourself.
