Trailer for The Walking Dead Season 2 Surfaces

Matt Boiselle

If any of you attended this years Comic-Con 2011, you were witness firsthand to the newest trailer for The Walking Dead season 2.Coming in at a whopping 4 and a half minutes, this teaser certainly promises some wild storylines for this upcoming go-round with our favorite group of survivors and their undead antagonists. Robert Kirkman has issued a quote stating that this season will leave it's viewers "completely shocked". Could this mean some unexpected deaths? Maybe some new cast members or hopefully some returning ones (Michael Rooker...please)? It also has been released that the new season will begin on October 16th, 2 weeks earlier than last year's Halloween night premiere. Also noted is the new airtime of 9 p.m. which should make for easier viewing for some Graveshift workers like myself. Any way you slice it, get ready for a full 13 episode slate which I'm sure will not disappoint. Head below to see the new trailer and prepare your Tivo to capture some zombie madness this fall. As always, stay tuned to the site as we will keep you updated with any little bits that we get along the way.

Night of the Living Dead: Resurrection

Todd Jepperson

In 2012,the deceased have risen from their graves with only one instinct-to feed on the living. As academics speculate on the scientific cause of the phenomena, theologians point to the Armageddon foretold in the Book of Revelation. As the cities are over run and civilization crumbles, a family take refuge from the undead army in an isolated farmhouse in West Wales. But the greatest threat is already among them.

This is the premise of the newest re-imagining of George Romero's classic, Night of the Living Dead. North Bank Entertainment, along with Independent Moving Pictures and Mad Science Films, have teamed up and gotten behind director James Plumb to release this british remake of the 1968 paradigm Zombie flick. Filming is set to begin on September 24th 2011 in Carmarthenshire, Swansea and Cardiff, South Wales, UK.

Review: HUMAgeddon from Knightwatch Press

Todd Jepperson

We all know what will happen when the Z-virus finally rears its necrotic head; there’s the end of civilization, massive population extinctions, and bands of survivors joining together to make humanity’s last stand . . . but then what? What happens after the end of everything? Robert Butt and Scott Twells via Knightwatch Comic Books introduce HUMAgeddon, where the Zombies have colonized and the humans are the ones invading.

There are things that I both like and dislike about this comic. Firstly, I like the fresh take on the genre. In my world, people always win. I love zombies, but, that doesn’t mean I have to like them. In HUMAgeddon, the time has come for us to take our lives back and send the monsters running for their . . . undeaths? However, the Zombies in the comic talk, think, and feel. They live in family units where the kids look to Mom and Dad for safety and direction and humans have no regard for them whatsoever. The art is very rough and dark with a healthy heap of splattery violence. Dialogue is lacking and cliché. All of that said, the story line intrigues me enough that I’m interested in what comes next.

For me, I can do without children huddling behind their mothers being slaughtered. I could use a little more character development, and a deeper story line. However, if you’re interested in a gritty, dark twist on the genre that’s easy to read and visually engaging, HUMAgeddon just may be the thing you’re looking for. Drag yourself over to the Knightwatch Press main site by clicking the link and grab a copy for yourself.

Zombies Invade Deadliest Warrior Sept 14

David Brown

A few months back, we reported that there was news of Spike TV and the show Deadliest Warrior doing an episode devoted to Vampires vs Zombies.  Over the weekend they divulged more information about the episode at Comic-Con.  The episode is looking to air Wednesday September 14th on Spike TV.  A trailer for the episode is available to view below.

Details divulged during the Comic-Con panel include a ratio of 63 zombies to one vampire in order to ensure a proper kill and the fact that we are dealing with Romero zombies against vampire with a still beating heart. The panel was moderated by Geoff Boucher, along with very special guests Steve Niles, Max Brooks and Robert Daly, and the Deadliest Warrior team of Richard "Mack" Machowicz, Dr. Armand Dorian and Executive Producer, Rasha Drachkovitch. If you would like to watch the Comic-Con panel in full (around 48 minutes), you may do so by clicking here and heading to the Spike TV website. We look forward to this great news and will be sure to keep you updated with our collective impressions of the episode once it airs.

Home Grown 'Return of the Living Dead' Trioxin Can Prop

Sometimes, the efforts of one are just too cool to not share with the many.  Case in point - this 55 gallon Trixon drum straight from Return of the Living Dead.  This weathered replica was precision-made by Dave Little and even features working red and blue lights!

When I first started I painted the 55 gallon barrel green, I had the barrels from Return of the Living Dead Part 2 and 3 mixed up. The barrel from Part 2 was black and some of the barrels from Part 3 were green. I decided to make my barrel all rusted, it ended up being my version of a 2-4-5 Trioxin container. I figured since I couldn't match the barrel from Part 2 I might as well make my own version.  My barrel has the same access instructions and info stenciled on the front as the barrel from Part 2.

The Ultimate Zombie Shotgun

Matt Boiselle

His name is Creek Stewart, and he might have just created the greatest zombie killing weapon ever. In an attempt to bolster the defense needed to survive a zombie outbreak, this hardcore survivalist has designed ( prototype only) a 19 shot pump-action shotgun capable of taking down the most evil of flesh eaters. Here is the skinny on this weapon of undead destruction: comes equipped with signal flares, 3 separate storage cases located in the stock, pump & pistol grips able to carry such needed items like matches, steel wool, firestarters,a folding baking pan ( guess if you want some brownies while on the run), trash bags, a fishing kit, non- lubricated condoms ( don't ask), water purification tabs, a survival blanket, first aid kit, a whistle and 25 feet of "snare wire" tightly coiled in the buttstock. All of this comes with the option to have a 5 inch military ka-bar knife mounted like a bayonet. Price is currently unavailable as this is merely a mock-up, but if you had the cash to spare, I'm sure Mr. Stewart would listen. This sounds like some kind of demented blueprint made up by a group of angry Boy Scouts, but hey if you want to keep from becoming just another run of the mill zombie treat, this is your weapon of salvation.

Dead Alive Blu-Ray Set to Reanimate October 4th

Matt Boiselle

Attention zombie lovers!! Coming this October 4th, one of the wildest, goriest, and without a doubt most over the top films to be released in a long time will crash into your homes when it is unleashed on Blu-Ray format. Directed by Oscar-winning director Peter Jackson ( Lord of the Rings trilogy), this absolute gore-fest will be celebrating its 20th anniversary and to be blatantly honest, if you haven't seen this film yet....you must!! In a nutshell, the story revolves around a mama's boy who is forced into looking after his overbearing, evil to the core mother. The mama's boy meets the girl of his dreams.....but mom isn't so happy with the attention now off of her, so she attempts to ruin her son's new love relationship, oh yeah did I forget to mention that mommy has just been bitten by a Sumatran Rat Monkey? Yep, mother is now a blood-thirsty zombie and is spreading her undead disease across the town. Will the mama's boy save the day? Will he save his new girlfriend? Will you be able to sit through all of the stomach-churning scenes? You will only be able to uncover these answers if you purchase this awesomely psychotic film when it rolls onto the market. Unfortunately there hasn't been any info about the price, special features, or whether or not this will be the US unrated version or the overseas director's cut. Any way you slice it fans, this film is worth a look and should be listed soon on Amazon's pre-order page so bust out your shiny credit cards and order now!!!

Dead Island Pre-order Incentives from Steam

David Brown

A few weeks ago we mentioned the Dead Isalnd pre-order incentives being offered by Gamestop here.  It seems that Steam is offering the same bonuses as Gamestop:

  • The Ripper: A baseball bat combined with a rotary saw
  • The Bloodbath Arena DLC is another pre-order bonus, and pits players against multiple waves of zombies.
  • The Sonic Pulse Grenade: A new weapon offered in conjunction with the Bloodbath Arena.
The game will cost $50 on Steam and $59.99 on XBOX360 and PS3.  Steam is offering an incentive in that buying four copies of the game will only cost $150 which will but the average cost per copy of the game to $37.50, a great deal if you can find the friends to go in on this with you.

As always, stay tuned to the site as we continue to receive more information on this game that looks to reinvent the zombie game genre.

Zombie-Proof House

Matt Boiselle

Ok zombie lovers, I know that the recent recession has hit us all pretty hard in the wallet, gas is going way up, we are being taxed on everything from booze to cigarettes to dog grooming ( no lie - look it up). But the area of business taking the biggest blow has been the real estate market. Well maybe people haven't been looking for the right house....until now!! A home-building company known as KWK Promes, has recently started mock ups for what is being called "The Safe House". This house is supposedly engineered to repel a full blown zombie apocalypse, compete with moving concrete walls that actually fold over all windows and open areas when the owner hits the "panic" alarm. Unbelievable ?? You ain't heard nothin yet. The house has only one entrance (on the second floor) which can only be accessed by crossing a drawbridge. Prices have not been set but the builders are willing to discuss with you whatever you need to help you become better prepared and safeguarded in the event of an undead Armageddon. Look at it this way...if you want the house, hopefully the end of the world will occur before your mortgage payments start !

The Zombies and Toys Forum is Undead

Todd Jepperson

A couple of months ago, we had a sort of e-meeting here at Zombies and Toys. As we often do, we talked a lot about things we should be doing to make the site better for you, our readers. One of the things that we came up with was that we need to be the place anyone can come and connect to discuss all things Zombie. It was a stressful ride, and at one point, I thought crashed the whole thing; but it’s happened. The Zombies and Toys forum is now available!

The plan for this thing is to grow it so big it cannot be contained. We will be creating threads that give you, the reader, a place where you can infect the minds of others with your own unique brand of living dead. Soon enough, there will be threads where independent toy makers, film makers, and writers can put their work on display or get together and talk about your favorite, or upcoming, projects.

You can get to the forum by following the link at the top of the page, or by simply clicking right here. Sound off and let us hear you scream.

First "The Walking Dead' Season 2 Teaser Clip Released

David Brown

With the first season of "The Walking Dead" AMC showed us that zombies could become a prime marketing product for a tv show.  While the first season was cut to a short six episodes, season two promises to be a full 13.  AMC has been slowly releasing little tidbits to tide us over until the return of the show this October and this latest clip does not disappoint.  It is available below for your viewing pleasure:

After watching this clip it is hard to remain calm. Season two looks to take the adrenaline fueled plot and character to a place filled with just as much gore and as many guts.  Stay tuned to the site for even more clips and previews as we get them.

Howl-O-Scream 2011

Matt Boiselle

It's almost that time of the year, fellow friends of the undead. As the calendar screams towards the haunting season, Busch Gardens in Tampa, Florida will be hosting it's 12th annual Howl-O-Scream event, which is designed to scare the daylights (and wallets) out of tourists and locals alike. This years theme will be called " The Dark side of the Gardens", and judging by the mainpage of their website, this year could possibly be one not to be forgotten. In an attempt to (hopefully) satisfy the most die-hard of zombie fans, the theme park has simply stated this years tagline as " Zombies live here". No other details have been given outside of select dates of operation ( Sept 23rd- Oct 29th), so we will have to wait as to what exactly the sick minds that be at Busch Gardens have in store. I have relatives that have visited the park in years past for this event and I have been told that there has been nothing short of a truly terrifying experience all around, In other words " This ain't NO Mickey Mouse party !!" So stay tuned to our site, because when news gets updated on this horrific event, I will make sure to get the news to you all.

Zombies vs. Nazis Review

David Brown

Don't let the title fool you here, you are not about to play another round in Call of Duty, what you find here is the latest book from Scott Kenemore, author of titles such as The Zen of Zombie, Z.E.O, The art of Zombie Warfare, The Code of the Zombie Pirate and Zombie, Ohio.  Following along the same lines as Z.E.O and The Zen of Zombie, Kenemore uses his witty dialect and tongue in cheek humor to delight us yet again.  Z

Zombies vs. Nazis follows the writings of three Nazi officers who are sent to Haiti to find the secrets behind the mysticism of Voodoo and the zombies that it creates. Our story unfolds through the entries in their journals as they report back to the homeland.  In their individual entries we see the vastly different personalities of each officer.  Kenemore continues to portray some authenticity with his respect to not only the Nazi ranking system, but also to the dialect used.  You feel at times that you could be reading the journal entries of real individuals and this helps you really get into them.

The book's page count, clocking in at 250 pages, helps to pull the reader through at a brisk pace.  Helping to continue this pace are the wonderful illustrations by Adam Wallenta. Every time we see one we are pulled further in, even though there are some minor issues with repeated imagery.  Wallenta's illustrations work together with Kenemore's writing to create a seamless experience.

If you are a fan of Kenemore then you will not be disappointed.  If you are looking for a quick humorous read then look no further than Zombies vs. Nazis. There is enough here for anybody that makes it a great inclusion to the library of an zombie lover.  Contact your local witchdoctor or shamble out and get yourself a copy today, you will not be disappointed.

For your chance to win a free copy of Kenemore's latest book, email your name and address to nazi@zombiesandtoys.com.  Make sure to enter by the end of August.  Thanks to Skyhorse Publishing for sponsoring this month's contest!

The Zombie ACRES Project

Todd Jepperson

Zombie A.C.R.E.S. (Animated Corpses Reintegration Experimental Subdivision) is an empire in infancy. They’ve got eBooks, merchandise, fiction, artwork, contests and give-aways for every occasion. If you enjoy what you see, put your dime down and become part of the project by joining the ‘street’ or ‘net’ teams. They’re looking for talented writers and artists along with ambitious fans who wouldn’t mind dropping a flyer or tweet every now and then.

But what is Zombie ACRES, you ask?

“Zombie A.C.R.E.S is [their] own world where Roslun Global has dominated the pharmaceutical landscape; and with that domination comes all the money and power you would expect. All of this was used to try and find a way to stop death… and with success… kinda…
Roslun has managed to create walking and talking zombies, and has built a gated community to house these experiments… these horrors. Enter Zombie A.C.R.E.S. (Animated Corpses Reintegration Experimental Subdivision). But all is not well in this land of greed and death, as it seems a side effect of this process may be a conscience, or one lone salesman of death has found his own conscience, since he speaks up against Zombie A.C.R.E.S. and Roslun Global.”

Easily my favorite part of the project, so far, is the ten part fiction section in the sidebar. There, you’ll find titles such as Behind Closed Doors, Mommy Deadest, and The Boy Who Cried Zombie. Each of these stories is worth at least as much of your time as it will take to read them through. My favorite, (again, so far,) is Tough Love. We’d hate to spoil plots for you, so we’re not going to here. We’ll just let you know what’s there and have you go read what they have and enjoy them for yourselves. You’ll have to remember that these are not professional pieces of literature, though. Just sticking to the story Tough Love, I can make a short list of imperfections; but, the point is that the stories are great. I can sit through a tense discrepancy, or a misnomer if the story is engaging enough and I think you’ll find that most of these are.

It’s hard to put into one post exactly who the Zombie ACRES are, or what they do, so just know that there’s a small part of the WWW that’s massing, and you’ll wanna find it before it passes you by. Check out Zombie ACRES and enter their current (as of this writing) contest to win your own cute little Zombie plush. To make sure you don’t miss out on any of the updates, check them out on Facebook and follow them on Twitter. With enough support, this could really turn out to be a great place for creative enthusiasts to get a good start into the slow-paced, hungry world of the living dead.

Holiday classic - hungry cadavers! Marvel Comics visits a timeless classic...with zombies

When Charles Dickens penned the timeless tale "A Christmas Carol," more than likely, he had no idea of its longevity, countless retelling and impact on the holiday season. The Englishman surely had no concept that his chronicle of yuletide redemption would so easily fit the walking dead. Critically acclaimed writer Jim McCann (New Avengers: The Reunion: Suspicion, Hawkeye and Mockingbird) has brought more than just flesh-hungry ghouls to Victorian England, he's, oddly enough, brought some life as well.

Zombies & Toys (ZT): Hi Jim, can you give us a little of your intro/background? Personally, artistically?
Jim McCann (MC): I started out in the ABC writer development program in early 2000. I was a writer for One Life to Live, wrote a couple of short stories and plays.

ZT: When did the idea of Zombies Christmas Carol (ZCC) come about? How did the idea of ZCC start?

MC: It was kind of a combination between Janet Lee (artist of Return of the Dapper Men) and myself wanting to do the traditional Christmas Carol. Marvel came back with the Zombies Christmas Carol idea and said “Do you want to do it?” At first, I thought it was a joke.

ZT: And afterwards?
MC: I realized it could actually work. I didn’t’ want to write it as a joke. It would have been lazy. Playing it straight was more scary. It was one or the most challenging projects I’ve written.Janet had already moved on to doing the adaptation of EMMA, but we ended up with amazing artists in David Baldeon and Jeremy Treece.

ZT: Whose idea was it to place zombies and Scrooge together? Did it seem like a natural fit or was it a reach?
MC: I went back and read the original tale. [A Christmas Carol] was intended as a horror story of Christmas. Scrooge was described as ‘No warmth could warm him and no wintry weather chill him.’ Scrooge was kind of like a zombie. There was a surplus population of those in need. We said let’s make them zombies, instead of hunger – hungry dead.

ZT: Will the Ghosts of Christmas be undead instead?
MC: Ghosts are spirit like and zombie like.

ZT: What is the future of ZCC? Will this have the legs of Marvel Zombies?
MC: I’ve thought about what to do. It would be hard press to find another script, maybe Oliver or Sleepy Hollow. Let it be out there, see how this, how this goes rather than beat it into the ground.

ZT: Do you enjoy the undead? If so, what zombie or zombie film is your favorite?
MC: I’m not a zombie guy. Kind of freaked out by horror and gore!

ZT: What is your next future work?
MC: A couple of Marvel one-shots, more creator-owned work and a return back to [writing] my spy roots.

ZT: Thanks Jim for a great interview and a truly horror-filled take on a classic. For more on Marvel's Zombie Christmas Carol, go to www.marvel.com or your nearest comic book shop. For more on Jim McCann, go to www.jimmccannonline.com.

Joe Ledger: The Missing Files

Todd Jepperson

Remember our review of Patient Zero, the novel by Jonathan Maberry? Well, in that book, we learned all about a Baltimore P.D. Detective named Joe Ledger and a top secret branch of government called The Department of Militarty Sciences. In Patient Zero, Ledger is up against Seif al Din (read: the zombie plague); in The Dragon Factory, it’s eugenics; and in King of Plagues it’s a whole new level of evil revisited with the 10 biblical plagues of Egypt. Joe’s been around and killed them all; or has he?

Coming soon, from Blackstone Audio, is Joe Ledger: the Missing Files. This audio anthology, read by Ray Porter, will contain five short stories detailing how the boss of Echo Team spends his free time.

Countdown is a prequel to Patient Zero where you can learn all about Joe’s big promotion.

Zero Tolerance is an audio version of the sequel story to Patient Zero which appeared in The Living Dead 2; the DMS gets back to work on Seif al Din and wraps up all the loose ends.

In Deep, Dark, Joe finds himself about a mile underground on assignment to contain a military experiment gone tragically awry.

Material Witness will have fans of Maberry’s first horror series riding shotgun down memory lane when Joe visits the creepy little town of Pine Deep where “nothing is what it seems.”

Also included will be the exclusive, and all new, Dog Days. In the wake of personal tragedy, Ledger takes some time off to get himself a little R&;R; hunting the world’s most dangerous assassin.

This anthology is set for release on the first of August, 2011. You can snag your own copy either on the Blackstone Audio site or Amazon. Don’t miss it!

THE WALKING DEAD Board Game?

Todd Jepperson

With the upcoming debut of season two of THE WALKING DEAD, we thought now would be a good time to let everyone know about an email we received not all that long ago. It seems that Cryptozoic entertainment, famous for their World of Warcraft trading card game, has announced a partnership with AMC to create “The Walking Dead Board Game.” You may remember them from our April post announcing their line of TWD trading cards. It seems they’ve taken interest in the series and will be continuing to snatch up rights to produce all kinds of goods.

From the press release:
“Do you have what it takes to fight off killer zombies? Will you leave your friends behind and save yourself? Or will you try to save the remnants of the human race from a world that has gone completely mad? “The Walking Dead Board Game” gives players the opportunity to take on the role of their favorite characters from the show, battling walkers in a struggle to survive in a post-apocalyptic, zombie-infested world. Fear mounts as time and resources run out and players face the possibility of becoming plagued with the infectious disease and turning against their own kind! You are kept on the edge of your seat as you try to escape your doom. Don't miss your chance to crack the skulls of flesh-eating zombies and defend the world from the forces working towards its demise!”

This game is scheduled for release in September and will carry a price tag of $39.99. Take a ride on this link and check out the page on their website. It’s looking to be a very good year. Happy Hunting!

Building block or road block? Does new zombie defense game deliver? Dead Block review

We all think we know how we would handle a zombie apocalypse but do we really? Would we know how to set traps and board windows? Would we know how to find wood and prep freezing machines in order to fend off undead hordes raised by rock n' roll?

Dead Block is giving us the chance to find out.

Candygun Games' downloadable game allows players to board up windows, set up traps of hot grease and ice cold freon all while holding off the brain-chewing zombies roaming your town. The graphics are well done in their effect to put you in a 50's-ish town with ghouls outside the window. Use of quick-time events allow your character (either a construction worker, traffic warden or boy scout) to build barricades faster and search debris for items quicker. The sounds work as the music sets the tone and the atmosphere, striking somewhere between days of soda pop and nights of living dead.

Dead Block can be played by four players in a split-screen format. For those who want to go it alone, there is a 10 level single-player campaign.

Zombie factor? High. Dead Block is a fun and spooky game that for 800 points or $9.99 can't be beat. It's a nice shift from big FPS shooters and RPGs running amok on our consoles.
