Review: Working Stiffs by Lucy Leitner

Reviewed by Dorothy Emry

Close your eyes and think for minute about what might happen if The Office met The Walking Dead. That will give you some idea of what lies within the pages of Lucy Leitner’s Working Stiffs, Book 4 in Necro Publications’ Fresh Flesh Series. The story is set in Pittsburg, PA, the author’s adopted hometown.

Pro-Well Pharmaceuticals CEO Marshall Owens is no new comer to combating negative PR. A one time meth-dealer, Owens has turned his hand to running legal drugs, the kind developed to “find every possible solution to anything that kills, sickens, or just plain bothers mankind from cancer to male cleft chins” as he tells a local newscaster. In the public eye, he seems to have turned over a new leaf, concerned with the greater good of humanity. Inside his corporation, he’s concerned, like most CEOs, with maintaining a good bottom line, but Owens’s cost cutting method hinges on his drug-induced homeless-people-converted-to-zombie chain gang to work the factory production lines. The advantage: zombies don’t demand health or paid holidays. Disadvantage: their flesh-eating tendencies.

Even before the zombies get out of hand and invade their office space, Pro-Well’s still-living staff members are a generally cranky bunch of eccentric characters. Hank, an ex-con who hangs out at a gay bar called the Male Box, is the world’s ultimate poster boy for disgruntled employee. Will, Hank’s rule-abiding rotund supervisor, seems to live to recite company policy to his coworkers. Lillian, Will’s pear-shaped paramour, is in charge of terminations and therefore the company’s most despised employee. The new kid on the block is Janice, a Goth girl with misplaced romantic notions about Hank, whose first day a work just happens to be the day the undead begin their ghastly takeover.

Quirky characters and comic imagery make this book an entertaining first novel. Leitner has a talent for crafting amusing quips such as the description of one zombie with “eyes as glazed as a Krispy Kreme doughnut” and Will’s PC defense of his recently reanimated coworkers as “living impaired.” Most of the characters are perpetual complainers however. Hank, the main character, is negative about almost everything and everyone in his life before, during and after the advent of the zombie attacks. His negative inner dialogue gets a bit old before the end of the book. Overall, though, Working Stiffs is a fun read and hopefully this belated review (the paperback ebook came out in May last year!) will provide a boost in sales for the book and some well-deserved attention for its author. For more about Lucy Leitner and her views on zombies you can read this interview at Boring Pittsburg.

REVIEW: Before Dawn

Phillip Hynes

With The release of the Before Dawn DVD today, we were lucky to get a chance to review this movie.

Firstly, I have got to say that this is an intense and gritty Zombie movie, which is sure to become a firm favourite with zombie fans everywhere. Set in England, it centres around a married couple who are struggling with their relationship. They set out to a remote farmhouse in the Yorkshire Dales to resolve their differences and things quickly start to take a turn for the worse.

Dominic Brunt, the lead male, is also the Director of this movie and his on screen wife (Joanne Mitchell) is also his wife off screen. This helps to make their relationship in the film authentic; something a lot of other movies don’t quite capture with any real sincerity.

It’s easy to draw comparisons to 28 Days Later, with a dash of Night of the Living Dead. The zombies are quite terrifying and are of the worryingly fast variety. Dominic does a great job of revving up the tension, especially with the first undead encounter. I really can’t elaborate without ruining the scene for you, but it’s one of those scenes that makes you tuck your legs up under you. The other encounters don’t get any easier to watch. There aren't any Walking Dead – quick poke in the eye zombie kills, this film has no super heroes, just an average guy having to beat the undead to pieces in a flurry of raw aggression that will leave you exhausted, complete with all the gruesome sounds. I’m glad they used this approach for the zombies, it just makes them so much more dangerous and after watching the movie I seriously doubt my chances of surviving a zombie outbreak.

The movie has a couple of surprises along the way and it keeps the story interesting. You will find yourself rooting for Dominic as he faces  the challenges of a zombie outbreak. By  all accounts it was a discussion on “what would you do” in a zombie outbreak with his wife that inspired this movie and you can see what the outcome was along the way.

I heartily recommend this movie and it is a refreshing change of direction from the majority of zombie films. I will also be picking up a copy on Monday and it could even be a contender for my best zombie film of all time.

Book Review: Last Days by Adam Nevill

Reviewed by Dorothy Emry

Adam Nevill has been called “Britain’s answer to Stephen King” (The Guardian)—a title that’s definitely well deserved. In fact, his newest horror novel, Last Days, gave me more chills than anything I’ve read of King’s. An unrelenting labyrinth of dark secrets and supernatural terror, Last Days is a page turner from the prologue to the last page.

Independent film maker specializing in the bizarre and bloody, Kyle Freeman’s life has already descended into a financial nightmare. Deeply in debt, he can’t believe his luck when an offer comes from Maximillian Solomon, CEO of Revelation Productions, to do a documentary for the sum of one hundred thousand pounds. Pre-production has already been done: the locations scouted, the interviews scheduled, the travel arrangements booked. Kyle can pick his own crew and shoot the film in the way he pleases—guerilla style with just his buddy Dan as cameraman and his go-to editor Finger Mouse. Even though Max’s company has been known for life-affirming, self-help products, this project will be a departure: the inside story of an infamous seventies cult called the Temple of Last Days. Its leader, Sister Katherine, ended her reign in a bloody night of murder, suicide, and alleged supernatural activities. The subject is right up Kyle’s alley; the only drawback is that he and Dan must go to six locations in three countries and shoot the entire film in eleven days. Breakneck pace aside, the deal’s too good to pass by.

From the first interview, on the first day of shooting, the prospects grow sweeter. Kyle and Dan begin to realize that they may have stumbled into the story of a lifetime—not just the rumor of the supernatural, but the real deal. Racing from London, to France, to the a desert compound in Arizona, to an interview with one of the last surviving cult members in Seattle, they soon understand, though, that one hundred grand won’t come close to covering the price they may pay for unraveling the secrets of the Temple of Last Days. Those they interview die or come close to death. It’s soon evident that what Max Solomon has told them only skims the surface of his knowledge of Sister Katherine’s dark dealings. The old presences that the cult called forth—the Blood Friends—are once again active, reaching into their dreams and clawing into their lives.

Last Days will get under your skin quickly and make you want to read the whole book in one sitting, so plan to set aside some time to indulge that impulse and read through the night. Be forewarned though: Nevill’s story will send enough chills up your spine that you may want turn up the heat and leave all the lights on.

Charles Nowlin

Sunday, February 10 was the highly anticipated Collectors Night at New York Toy Fair 2013. Many of Mattel's (and it's online exclusive distributor Matty Collector's) future offerings were on display for the media.

The big reveal was a full, color, nearly finalized Masters of the Universe Castle Grayskull prototype. It features three stories of fun and plenty of nostalgia for those who owned the original. There are also several new additions to this iconic playset including two secret entrances, the ability to interact with He-Man and Scareglow, a removable handle for easy carrying, jetpack and Windraider stand.

As for new action figures, loose and packaged versions were lime-lighted which include Mantenna, The Fighting Foe Men 3-pack, NA He-Man, Fang Man, Strobo (traveling exclusive), Clamp Champ, Karatti, Snake Face, Octavia, King He-Man and Castaspella.

Matty Collector is also adding a new 6 figure Filmation series to the MOTU Classics brand currently available on their site. The first three offerings, 1 per month beginning in July, are Batros, Icer and Shokoti.

Also on display were tiered stands to help display your loose collection and protective cases for those carded collectors.

Matt Boiselle

Would it be asking too much to have that Jared guy from Subway be replaced by a ravenous, plague-infected, flesh-craving minion of the dead ?.......or am I thinking too much ?

Either way, if you pledge your undying devotion to those sandwich-creators but don't want to look too goonish wearing one of their shirts around town, AND you just happen to be a fanatic of all things dead & walking, then THIS shirt is for you ! Styled in the model of Subway's slogan, Eat Fresh, is this HUGE selling shirt from www.tshirtbordello.com that happens to be on sale for a measly 10 bucks. But the catch is that the shirt is only available at this price for the next 24 hours so get your toasted buns on over there and pick this up !!

Chills And Thrills Monthly

by Dorothy Emry

Want a go-to place to get ideas on books to add to your reading list? Then check out Chills and Thrills Monthly, a site that provides a list of horror, mystery, and thriller ebooks “to help readers discover new authors through ones they already love.” A new collection will be posted each month.

So far the site features the works of five authors: Russell Blake, T.W. Brown, Scott Nicholson, Daniel Pyle, and J. Thorn. Another writer, Billie Sue Mosiman, has already been added to the group; look for some of her titles in the upcoming collection for March. When asked about plans for the site’s future, Thorn said that a few more writers may be added as regulars in the months to follow, but the plan is to keep the site “streamlined and uncluttered for readers.” The site is exactly that: a presentation of book covers with handy links to Amazon for purchasing, no reviews, and no sales pitches.

The titles of greatest interest for Z&T followers from February’s list are T.W. Brown’s Dead: Siege & Survival and Zomblog: Snoe, but the novels devoid of zombies are worth checking out, too. The twisted villains, secret experiments, dark fantasy, and super-assassins that fill the pages of the other authors’ books are sure to please those looking for—you guessed it—chills and thrills.

The Walking Whedon takes a huge bite out of network TV !

Matt Boiselle

There is NOTHING wrong with holding a grudge and spitting a little venom every now & then, as long as it's potentially used for entertainment purposes....even if you had passed away and have been reanimated....

Such is the case for mega-director Joss Whedon (mastermind director of Marvel's Avengers) - who recently lent his dead and decaying clay mated self to Adult Swim's Robot Chicken, where he plays a VERY vindictive zombie with some sharp words for network television - feel free to click the pic to be taken to the video clip, and sit back and enjoy the goriness that ensues, for the regulars of network television will forever rue that day that they came across The Walking Whedon !!

Zombie Cage Fighter Invades AMC's Comic Book Men

Matt Boiselle

The undead have answered the bell for round 2 ! The largely popular independent comic book Zombie Cage Fighter, created by former UFC fighter Nate " Rock " Quarry, has sprung up again - this time making an appearance on AMC TV's hit show Comic Book Men.

On the show this past Thursday night, Nate stopped by the guys' shop and asked if they were interested in carrying his comic - the fellas agreed, but only if Nate could arrange a UFC-style cage fight between two costumed characters representing Jay & Silent Bob. All parties were in attendance including Kevin Smith & Jason Mewes, who both had great interest in watching their MMA dopplegangers kicking the crap out of each other - I won't ruin the rest for you if you haven't seen it yet, but trust me..its very interesting !

Nate also sat down with AMC to discuss the origins of his comic, where you can check out just by clicking on the pic of Ming Chen getting choked out, and then hit the link to read the interview I had with Nate myself this past summer when the comic was first slated to hit the shelves. If you haven't done so, also head on over to www.zombiecagefighter.com and grab an issue of this killer comic itself, along with awesome shirts, decals and lots of other goodies - ENJOY !

Evil Dead the Musical in Stunning 4D… doesn’t get any more real than that

Gnat

So, you have heard about the live actors at shows like Rocky Horror, the huge cult following and people dressing up. Well, let me turn you on to an even more epic show that will not only entertain you, but cover you in fake blood and make you laugh as well as remind you why you love horror in the first place!

This amazing, fun show is Evil Dead the musical (the ultimate 4D experience) and right now it is running in Vegas, which might seem a little far for some; but really, for an event this epic--and with tax money on its way--why not plan a little vacation and head on over.

How many times are you going to get a chance to see Ash attacked by his own hand LIVE right in front of you AND potentially get sprayed with his blood? Granted it is not Bruce, but this Ash is just as epic.

You can check out this video  just to get a taste then you can follow the action here on Facebook. For more info you can go here  to check out show times, pricing and location. Soon I will be coming back to you with an interview from the director of this masterpiece!  So keep your eyes peeled but in the meantime get your butt to Vegas and see this epic cult classic in 4D (with no silly glasses even)!

The Walking Dead Season 3 Blu-Ray case: get your wallets out !

Matt Boiselle

Just when you thought AMC's The Walking Dead had topped out with last year's camper-zombie Blu-Ray display case, but wait a minute !!!! How about while watching Season 3 on Blu-Ray, you can have The Governor's fish tank with decapitated heads watching you ?? The best part is, you add the water !!!!

Forgive the overwhelming enthusiasm for this news item, but this may be as cool as it gets for fans of the hit show. Thanks to MTV Geek, this news broke a few hours ago and early word is that Amazon has fielded NUMEROUS e-mail requests for more info. Unfortunately, not much more info has been made available other than the notion that you can fill each of the case's two tanks with water, and there will almost surely be electronics involved so that lights may shine from underneath the heads. No word on a release date or pricing, but don't fret- we here at Zombies & Toys will keep all of you updated on the latest info as it comes across the wire, but in the meantime, feel free to click on the pic for more images of this killer Blu-Ray packaging....THEN watch the mid-season premiere of The Walking Dead this Sunday...all the while squirreling your pennies away for this beauty...because something tells me it won't be cheap.

Dead Space 3 REVIEW - Spaced out? Does EA’s survival horror keep true to its roots?

http://www.onlysp.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/dead-space-3.jpg

Dead Space 3
Publisher:          Electronic Arts
Developer:        Visceral Games
Platform:          PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Microsoft Windows
Release date:    February 5, 2013

Five years ago, our concept of outer space was shattered.  It was clawed, ripped and brought down to ghoulish earth with Dead Space’s nightmarish speed and circumstances.  Gone was the stars’ safety of treks and even wars.  We were now exposed to a darker enemy that did not burst from chests or hunt us for skulls.  Gamers met the Necromorphs.  They reminded us that anywhere humankind went, horror and terror were sure to follow.  The Necromorphs also reminded us that the flesh we leave behind is easily resurrected and sent against us.  Now, Dead Space’s angst-ridden hero Isaac Clarke returns and so do the shambling dead.

Story
Dead Space 3 (DS3) picks up with a down-and-out Clarke thrust back into the world of twisted religion and the ominous Markers fans have come to fear.  The game begins with a refreshing if albeit doomed tutorial as players control an exploring soldier on an ice planet; the same alien tundra that Isaac will be facing soon enough.  The tale twists and turns and thrusts into the future where Clarke is sent on a rescue mission to find Ellie, his ex-girlfriend (poor Isaac, wasn’t his ex-girlfriend Nicole trouble enough?)  From there on, you must navigate the engineer through a death-squad filled city, zombified ghost ships and mined filled space just to land on an in hospitable planet filled with ice-adapted Necromorphs and zealot shock troops.  At times, you may not be sure exactly what is going on in DS3 as the story turns this way and that way but it will keep your attention.

Graphics
Visually, DS3 is a majestically good looking game.  From the beginning squalor of a city to the alien planet, to the EVA suits and the twisted corpses attacking you, DS3 is beautiful.  You can often just let Isaac stop and watch the background and environments behind him.  The only complaint is that some of the NPCs look half-done compared to all of the amazing graphics around them.  The looks of the Necromorphs from the tentacled-canines to the emaciated Feeders to the mammoth bosses later are top notch and leave little detail behind.  DS3 pushes the graphic power of today’s consoles and it pushes them well.

Sounds
Guns fire with appropriate strength.  Space has an eerie vacuum.  Clarke grunts and groans as he should.  But the true stars of Dead Space 3’s sounds are the resurrected creatures out for your flesh.  The Necromorphs hiss, roar and scream as they should and often the sound is right behind you.  It is so well done that you will jump repeatedly.

Controls
Controlling and maneuvering in DS3 is laid out exactly as it should.  Fans will quickly fall back into familiar finger moves in order to grab objects kinetically or freeze enemies in mid-air or fire and reload quickly.  The setting of real-time digital inventory and objective-checking adds to the realism and terror feel of Dead Space’s universe.  In addition to being able to control Isaac, get a friend and they can take the role of John Carver, soldier and fellow corpse-killer.  Together in Co-op play, Carver and Clarke defend themselves against the hellish infection of the parasitic Necromorphs.
http://media.t3.com/img/resized/de/xl_DeadSpace3_1_624.jpg

If there is any drawback, it is that the story gets convoluted and there are times when Isaac feels like an armored errand boy.  But it is refreshing to see that Dead Space has not lost the survival or the horror in the survival horror genre.  They’ve ramped up the action but EA has done a great job of keeping the thrills and chills of the original.  Some fans may also find themselves missing the original silent faceless Isaac as opposed to the more recent vocal and exposed version of the engineer.
Zombie Factor / Conclusion
Dead Space 3 is a game with zombies and zombiefied creatures in outer space.  It is science-fiction meets horror and it is a meeting worth attending.  With plenty of chances to build weapons and upgrade your armor, DS3 gives zombie fans what they want – the shambling dead, the running dead and a world ending around you all with a gun in your hand and a slim chance at survival.  The Necromorphs are ready for one last go.  Are you?

Danny Trejo: Zombie Hunter !!!!

Matt Boiselle

In my honest opinion ( which doesn't really mean much), the only reason why zombie outbreaks never seem to get handled correctly is directly due to the people that are brought in to stop them. While a finely assembled team that is armed to the teeth very well may get the job done, could it be that MAYBE only one man has the gonads to properly dispense with the undead so that humanity has a snowball's chance to survive ?

Let us scratch one name off of the list right now......Chuck Norris is not readily available (not sure why), so we march on....to a man that can single-handedly SNEER a zombie back into the bowels of Hell....a real Bad Ass ( and I mean that literally)....none other than Danny Trejo !!! No lie, one of the greatest tough guy actors to ever grace the big & little screens, will star in ZOMBIE HUNTER, a full-length independent motion picture from THE KLIMAX, a small group of  filmmakers that take serious pride in their work. Now, while 99% of the movie has been completed, there still remains some work to be done ( visual f/x, sound editing & assorted fees) - and that's where KICKSTARTER comes in. The best part is, when you contribute some dough to the movie, based on how much you donate, you get back in killer goodies !

ZOMBIE HUNTER is based in a post-apocalyptic wasteland that has been caused by a mysterious street gang called "Natas".......that's Satan backwards for all of you slow studies. A Camaro-driving loner that kills undead cannibals simply for entertainment stumbles on a small pack of survivors and decides to assist. Trejo himself plays Father Jesus, a zombie-slaying servant of the big man upstairs who offers no hesitation when it comes to kicking serious walker rear-end.

The KICKSTARTER project is (as of article posting time) @ $19,760, and needs to get to $30,000 by March 1st for completion to be attained, so why not kick in and get some sweet rewards as a bonus to not only getting to check out this awesome movie once it is released ? Click on the pic above to check out the new trailer for the movie, and then click down below on the KICKSTARTER link to find out more about all of the swag you can rake in for a donation - DO IT NOW !!!
