Released in 2001 by Gaga Communications, Stacy is a movie directed by Naoyuki Tomomatsu. It runs around 80 minutes and has been released by Synapse Films in the United States. It is not rated, but there is a nice warning on the back in red stating that “This film contains scenes with chainsaws, graphic gore, extreme violence, and girls in bunny outfits.” With a premise like this, you get a sense of what you are in for and the greatness that lies within this vision from the director.
Stacy, or Stacies as they are called in the movie, refers to the suffering girls of a mysterious illness plaguing the world. This disease affects girls ranging from 15 to 16. The girls, when affected, suffer from Near Death Happiness where they become extremely cheerful and give off a glow and radiance which signals their eminent death. Upon dying they become Stacies, zombies who look for the flesh of everyone around them. They emit a blue powder that the film refers to as Butterfly Twinkly Powder.
The Stacies can be neutralized as they are still bound in human bodies, but the only way to stop them from coming after you and not twitching for two hours post mortem is to go through the repeat kill process, during which their bodies are chopped into 165 pieces. This is a task often done by either the families of the girls or special troops known as the Romero Repeat Kill Troops. These troops are responsible for neutralizing, killing, and disposing of the Stacies. In the wake of the Stacy epidemic, the world population has been halved and in many places even seen zero percent population growth.
If all of these things sound like they borrow from other source material, you are not losing your mind. Stacy borrows heavily from many other films including the George Romero mythos as well as Sam Raimi territory with a one-handed chainsaw called the “Bruce Campbell’s Right Hand 2”. This chainsaw looks like a modified version of the famous implement from the Evil Dead movies. The other thing that this film includes is an abundance of gore and blood. You will see many limbs ripped from bodies, bodies ripped apart with bullets, and fountains of blood.
Do not watch this expecting a lot of a serious movie. There are a lot of jokes that take elements from Resident Evil and George Romero epics Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead. You will enjoy this movie if you found yourself interested in any of the previously mentioned films. The only complaint that I have about the film is that it takes itself too seriously when it tries to throw some scientific explanation for what is happening. Other than that, this is a film that I can get behind. There is a bit of a twist at the end of the movie that has to be watched to be believed.
Viewers be warned: This is Japanese 2.0 audio with English subtitles. Watch this if you can find it and you will not be disappointed. Stacie is a movie that will love you for your love of it. Enjoy it with every ounce of compassion that you can and it will give back a great story and some great gore.
