Zombie Safehouse

Dorothy Emry

Looking for the ideal shelter for the zombie apocalypse? Whether you feel safest on land, below ground, on the water or on the go, you might find your ideal hiding hole among the designs for the second annual Zombie Safe House Contest. The 2011 ZSHC brings us another hoard of noteworthy entries designed to keep humanity safe from extinction.

This year’s 1st place Gold Shovel Award winner is Austin Flemming’s Vagabond Mobile Safe House Device. Just strap it on your back, run for your life, and when you’re weary of fighting off the zombie hoards, set up camp under the Vagabond’s reflective dome. Why reflective? Zombies will probably mistake their reflection for another of their kind and just walk on by. When it’s time to move on, the Vagabond collapses to backpack size and you’re ready to hit the road again. Flemming’s mobile safe house is designed accommodate two people.

Have a larger band of survivors who want to stay on the go? Check out the 2010 competition winner, Shea Trahan’s SS Huckleberry, a great way to cruise through the zombie apocalypse.

If you don’t find your dream safe house among the ZSHC entries, then fire up the creative neurons while you still have an intact brain and work up a design of your own for next year’s contest. Some pretty nice prizes are to be had—like the round trip tickets and weekend passes to ZomBcon for this year’s 1st prize winner. The real prize, of course, is staying alive when the apocalypse hits.

Zombie Ammunition

Matt Boiselle Defending ourselves in the event of a zombie apocalypse will surely be no easy feat. Some of us may be able to rely on our sniper talents that have been perfected over numerous years of video games, others will simply grab a gun and pray to hit anything that moves. Regardless, we as a society that wishes to outlast the undead before we become one of them, must have some sort of arsenal at our disposal. Well thanks to the Hornady Ammunition Manufacturing Company, survivalists of all walks of life will now have some fuel for their firearms ! Introducing the Zombie-Max ( or Z-Max) bullets, which are available in numerous calibers (9mm, 7.62, 12 gauge & more). It must be stressed however that these bullets are not toys, they are real ammunition and are not intended to be used on people, animals, or anything living. These are in stock now online or at your local gun shop........if it hasn't already been ransacked yet.

●[Rec] 3: Genesis Trailer

Todd Jepperson

Being that I lived within twenty minutes of the apartment building from [Rec] and [REC] 2, I have a sort of affinity for these movies. Nonetheless, I think we can all get a little excited about this.

Save the Chapel

Matt Boiselle If you are a hardcore zombie fan and generally a lover of the undead as a whole, then the 1968 classic film Night Of The Living Dead, is most likely a staple in your everyday flesh-eating thought process. Unfortunately, the sands of time can be cruel and unforgiving to the purists, and in the following instance, this has proven true once again. Evans City Cemetary in PA, which was one of the main focal points used in the film, has been stricken by the aforementioned sands of time, rendering the Chapel in a state of ruin. The building itself, which has been used as a storage shed for the past decades will require a $ 50,000 repair fee to restore itself to its former state. However, a group of die-hard and devoted NOTLD fans are forming together on FaceBook and at organized fundraisers to resurrect a cinematic landmark. Gary Streiner, the sound engineer on the original film, and grassroots leader of NOTLD festivals in both 2008 & 2009, is spearheading the beneficial efforts to rehab the hallmark. Amongst the donations that have already been recieved, FixtheChapel.com has been selling posters, engraved paved bricks, and scheduling walking tours and vow renewals to help with the costs. If you have the time and a few bucks to spare, head on over to the site and pick up a poster, or just paypal them a donation, and help to preserve a piece if cinematic history.

Filming the Undead

Terry Swadener

The book, Filming the Undead by Rod Durick is a very interesting and entertaining read. Rod Durick channels William Castle and Roger Cormen showing that anyone with any amount of money can make a quality zombie movie. Even though the book goes into many details about the technical aspects of making a movie, the overall theme Rod Durick has throughout the book is to have fun.
The book begins at the obvious starting point of creating a quality story. One gets the idea that no matter how much money or how famous someone is, there is no substitution for an entertaining story, whether that story is funny, scary, or exciting. The Story section of this book sets up the format the book will follow. Every couple pages are broken into different headings. Using this format, Durick makes sure to cover everything while at the same time not dragging out a topic to boring technical jargon. The story section the steps from coming up with an original idea to storyboarding.
The next section is very important part of creating a movie, pre-production. Pre-production may not be the most exciting part of creating a movie since it consists of legal aspects, fund raising, scheduling, and scouting; however Durick makes these boring topics very enjoyable to read using anecdotes and examples from his own experience.
Sections three and four are the meat and potatoes of making a zombie movie. The makeup and effects as well as the actual production and filming are the fun parts. Durick goes through many of the steps and techniques used to create amazing zombie makeup and gore. The beauty of Durick’s tips and tricks are that you do not need a lot of money for these effects and they look unreal. The production and actual filming of a movie is where the fun really is. Seeing everyone dressed up and having a blast feeding on humans is the reason people make movies.
The post production and “getting your movie seen” sections help cement your movie and make all of the work and effort worthwhile. Durick breaks everything down so everyone can understand all of these aspects. You do not have to be a rich movie producer to have your movie seen, and Durick shows you this. This book is perfect for any type of movie maker. Whether it is a low budget amateur maker or a big budget movie maker, anyone can benefit from this book. You can purchase a copy of the book from amazon or zombifiedstudios.com. To win an autographed copy of the book send your name and address to filming@zombiesandtoys.com

Escape From Zombie City ( A One Way Out Novel)

Matt Boiselle
Looking for a spine tingling, immersive, edge of your seat thriller through a desperate attempt to stay alive during the zombie apocalypse ? Released on October 18th in both trade paperback and e-book format, The Zombie Feed Press, an imprint of Apex Publications, sends forth Escape From Zombie City ( A One Way Out Novel), written by Ray Wallace. The book drops you smack dab in the middle of a catastrophic outbreak of the undead, and gives you the feel that it is indeed you that has begun the end of days battle to keep yourself alive and safe amongst the recently re-animated. Many obstacles face you now as the city you reside in has been overrun by what the news broadcasts have stated as results of a failed government experiment ( is there any other kind ? ). The mere thought of just trying to move on to safer ground becomes an ever increasing futile attempt that is clouded by psycho survivalists, numerous roadblocks and stonewalled military defenses. This looks like a good read and if you are into the kind of novel that just doesn't paint the picture, but gives you the brush, then grab this book - on sale now at www.apexbookcompany.com/collections/the-zombie-feed

Spaztastic Zombies: Humor for the Living and the Undead

Matt Boiselle As most of us hardcore zombie-loving fans know you can never be too prepared, and in this mode of preparation, we at some point or another have either purchased or borrowed some sort of manual for our own entertainment or reference enjoyment. It is paramount that we not take ourselves too seriously in the quest to be fully ready in the event of an absolute apocalypse, and for that necessity, I present to you "Spaztastic Zombies: Humor for the Living and the Undead" by Tammy Lee Morris. In this short, well versed guide you are not only given the vital information necessary on how to deal with a zombie infestation in your area, but practical advice on such topics as how to beautify your captured flesh-eater via the correct use of makeup and fashion tips, reasons as to why a zombie could make a good husband ( for those who are lost at the game of love), and most importantly ( or unimportant depending on your level of priority), party tricks and games that you can play with your zombie. Now I know you are thinking " how could this possibly help me ?" Well there is a lot of very useful information in this book as well along the guidelines of the best weapons for defense, knowing how to identify your enemy, and the proper stocking up items for the immediate future ( DON'T forget the toilet paper !!) All in all Tammy Lee Morris tries not to take herself too seriously with this book, and that is a good thing. You can tell that she enjoys her writing and that in this day and age is becoming somewhat of a lost art. If you want a good pocket guide and don't want to break your bank ( and are looking for some entertaining material), I recommend picking this one up. Many movies have come and gone with the undead brand attached to them, some noteable, many forgettable. I first saw this movie in the Summer of 1987 on VHS with my brother and from that moment on I was hooked: gore, humor, storyline, great characters, excellent atmosphere. a killer soundtrack....and Linnea Quigley !!

Now - 26 years later, Mike Perez entertainment has released More Brains ! A Return to The Living Dead - The Definitive Documentary. This 2 hour DVD is stuffed to the limit with never before seen footage complete with over 30 brand new interviews with cast and crew from the first three movies. So head on over to Getmorebrains.com and order 1 for that special person this holiday season, or be greedy and just get one for yourself - either way this is an insane deal considering what you get for the bucks. Todd Jepperson

Our blog contests for Zombie Terrors—Asylum Press number one—have wrapped up and we’re on to number two! Eeek! is a retro-horror print comic you’ll definitely want to get your hands on. Coming in at 176 pages, this top quality compendium will give horror fans all they come for and more.

This retro-style anthology of horror tales is guaranteed to give you the eeries and creepies! Taking a pinch of black humor from EC comics and mixing it with the art stylings of House of Mystery and Warren Comics, EEEK! blends a heady broth that hits you like a burning incense stick to the retina. Jason Paulos delivers the goods with over 15 tales of revenge, zombies, vampires, ghouls and monsters. Each tale drawn in a different style reminiscent of the B&W horror mags of the 70's and 80's.
In Deadline of Death, we witness rival comic artists dabbling with malevolent forces that arrive in the form of a chain smoking goatee wearing Satan. In Lights! Camera! Murder!, a lovesick starlet and a ruthless film director embark on a doomed love affair that ends in pieces! In Easy Prey, a helpless girl gets lost in the wilderness... but is she all that she seems? In Head Trip, a hippie's love for music goes horribly wrong.

Those of you who’ve checked out Zombie Terrors have at least an idea of how Asylum does things. There are no cut corners here. The cover art was created by UK based Illustrator and Concept artist Aly Fell, who’s pin-up style art can be found over at DarkRising.

Online art classes are available for people who want to learn more about illustrating.

The comic work inside is the work of veteran comicker Jason Paulos. Known for his Hairbutt the Hippo Private Eye series which has featured in the Australian MAD magazine, his work on the Green Lantern series for DC comics, and now Eeek!; Jason has kept himself busy.

Head on over to the Asylum Press store and order your copy of Eeek! Also, don't forget back often so you don’t miss our next Asylum Press feature and all new contest. This one' gonna be big, folks.

Divine: the Series Wrapping up Pilot Program

Todd Jepperson

On Sunday, November 6, Divine: the Series will wrap up its six episode “Pilot Program.” These first six episodes were designed to introduce the plot, characters, and revolutionary modus operandi to the millions us out here in the WWW who enjoy the dark, complex, and supernatural side of viewership enjoyment. Their mission was simple: turn mainstream media on its head. Now, at the end of the beginning, we have a new chance to either take this thing to the next level; or sit idly by and watch it lumber its last moments in agony; until rigor and rot destroy all traces of the project.

We had the opportunity to pre-view episode six, entitled: “The Lips of Men,” but before we get into that, let’s go back a few weeks to where this all began. During high school, creator Ivan Hayden had an idea that wouldn’t be put to bed. Some years later, Ivan met up with Kirk Jaques and together they were able to further develop the concept and story arc into something neither man could discard. They then met up with producer Jason Fischer and Divine: the series was born.

With an enthralling composure and one-of-a-kind vision, they set out to make this thing the best of its kind. What kind it was, exactly, they didn’t know. They did know that they had a viable product on their hands and they set out to see where Divine would fit best in the industry. Considering their non-linear plot, barefaced Christian subject matter, and edgy feel they’d designed, it was decided that the internet would provide the best outlet. This allowed them total creative control of the project. There were no corners cut to meet market demographics. They didn’t water the show down to get a bigger budget. They kept it just as Ivan and Kirk had envisioned it. Divine is action, horror, suspense, violence, language, gore and everything else it should be.

From its outset, Divine has been a social media machine. The creators and contributors monitor their outlets daily to make absolutely sure they’re accessible to their fans as often as possible. Their Facebook has over five-thousand active fans from all over the world. Their Twitter is crawling with activity every single hour from the over four-thousand followers and we have the opportunity to jump on board while this thing is still in infancy.

We’ve been in contact with Ivan, series creator for the past several weeks, and this is what he had to say about his progeny so far:

Thanks, Ivan, for taking a moment to talk to us about Divine. It’s refreshing to see the way you approach social media as a way to get your fans in on the action.

We brought the fans in almost at day one. This was very risky, to get people behind a product without them having even the slightest glimmer of the product, because it sets you up for massive let down and outright revolt if they don't like what they ultimately see. However, in our effort to Convert the World to a better way, the viewer coming on board and getting a voice in what they are to watch is part of our Maple Blood proposal. For the studio it lowers risk while building a fan base at the same time... Did I get off topic?... I do tend to try to get people to drink the koolaid with me. Sorry.

So, Divine started as a comic back in your younger days, can you briefly describe its origins?

Well there were two separate comic iterations actually.

Back when I was a teen; [I was] bored, disenfranchised, a dreamer. I was raised High-Anglican. There were a lot of questions I had about what I was told was a fact when at school I was told a whole other set of fantastical things to accept as fact. The thing was, I would never personally verify any of it. I'll never actually see the Earth going around the Sun, or see a molecule or know who or what God is until I am no longer the me I know. Comics, Fantasy, Movies, Sci-Fi, were all escapes for my troubled youth and writing and drawing were how I worked through my mental frustrations and not all biblical.

Divine is a very deep, very complicated and emotional creature; just as I felt I was. He's flawed and he knows it (not unlike me), but he is what he is and, he believes what he believes regardless of other stimulus. Really all we can do is follow what we feel is right. Divine is actually one of 3 religious based comic / graphic novel stories I dreamed up but never did anything with as a kid.

The second iteration was when Kirk and I started talking the modern story of Divine; the one visible at our website. We came up with a "5 years before Divine: The Series" prequel. With Deacon Jim, Jin, and Divine but well before Father Andrew or Father Christopher. It's quite a cool tale actually and we had hoped to release prior to the webseries. We actually had some art work done by a friend of ours, but quickly we realized that we didn't know what we were doing and in an effort to Convert the World with webseries shelved it until we were on firmer footing or had greater support.

Now the series is out. We’ve got five episodes live and one on the horizon; so now, how can we help?

The web is a brave new world, one where you are the marketers. Get out there and talk. Use your voice whatever that voice is. Make Fan pages. Fan art. Plaster Divine pictures or posters on forums and boards. Critique, talk about what you like. What you hate…If you want to have a voice, you have to use it. And because the internet is so new for business, right now, they are listening. They watch hits. They follow trends and try to recreate them. Watch the show and if you see articles or press, post a comment and let them know you like Divine. If you didn't, tell them that you like Maple Blood or that you don't want commercials stuck in front of videos you are about to watch. The more sites see reaction the more stories on a topic they'll post.

Okay Ivan, it's post apocalypse, and we've been attacked by Zombies. Sadly, you were bitten. Do we leave you alone and let the virus run its course; or, would you prefer us to quiet the plague within you and put you out of your misery?

Kill me or I'll eat your brains first!!!

It’s your call, but because we’re such good friends, we’re going to create an Ivan Hayden collectible to remember you by. If you could design the perfect action figure which would it be; Zombie, or Survivor? What accessories would you come with?

Survivor.
A small quick scruffy dog with a good nose, great ears, sharp eyes and an ability to quickly get in and out of tight spaces. A Tommy gun with a drum clip or a shot gun with large scatter shot. A Katana. And a riding mace strapped to my hip. I sport motorcycle plated jean pants, a gray high collar leather jacket, a trench-coat with pockets galore, wrap around shades and a bikers carbon fiber scull cap helmet. We ride in my black challenger till that gas runs out, then we ride anything big and fast that moves.

Folks, that's Ivan Hayden. The man has a grand vision he wants to share with all of us. Let's get in that black Challenger and stick with it 'til the fuel runs out. In closing, recognize that Divine isn’t for everyone. Feedback has been mostly raving, but there have been detractors. Mostly, the reason people are turned off by this is the deeply Christian setting through which the plot unfolds. If the topic of deity is something you’d rather not confront, take a look and walk away if it displeases you. If you can comfortably digest faith and conviction and want to witness the birth of an innovative shift in the way we view television, take a seat and watch the five available episodes before you catch the premier of “The Lips of Men;” 11:00 AM this Sunday. New questions will arise, and we’ll get just a glimpse of what’s going on behind the eyes of Divine as he wades through the ages dispatching evil and labors under the weight of the task.
