XBOX LIVE ARCADE Black Friday Deals

Todd Jepperson

Listen, maybe some of you enjoy waiting in the freezing cold for hours, days, maybe even weeks for screamin' deals the day after Thanksgiving. Maybe, but, that crap's not for me. However, sitting in my underwear, on the couch in front of my flat screen, browsing Black Friday deals on XBOX LIVE ARCADE... now we're talking! What's even better, the deals start today!

Some of the more zombie friendly offerings this year include Dead Island and Left4Dead2 (1600 MS points/$20 USD; or £14.99/£11.99, respectively) and a whole horde of DLC, including Darksiders II, for as much as half off.

For a more complete list of everything up for grabs, check out the XBOX LIVE ARCADE Marketplace, or to just take a peek at the list, head over to the Examiner.

David Brown

Image

Last year the world took a trip to Dead Island. While many reviews were mixed, including those of our writers, nobody can deny that it was a great concept. Many of you have probably had the chance to play through the game and experience the things it had to offer.

For those of you that did not, there is hope.  According to our friends over at Joystiq, Deep Silver will be releasing a Game of the Year Edition on June 26.  The edition will include the Dead Island game as well as all 3 DLC packs whcih include "The Ryder White Episode" "Bloodbath Arena" and "The Ripper Weapon".

So far over three million copies of the game have sold worldwide and it doesn't look to end there.  You can pick up the GOTY Edition for $29.99 on PC, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.

ZOMBCON: Day 2

Todd Jepperson

Day two down, and we're having a blast! The day started off with a good half hour Zombie hunt on the beautiful beaches of Dead Island (on the courtesy plasma screen and Xbox 360 setup in the lobby) before climbing in and holding down the fort.

The lights went down in the whole place four times during the day. It might not sound like a big deal, but when you're at the world's largest congregation of shambling masses of the undead, the lights going out is like wholesale creepy-mood ambience.

For our Facebook fans among you, you'll recognize names like Zilyon Publishing and Zombie Tools, but let me introduce you all to our next-booth neighbors Night Zero. All con long, we've been hanging out with these guys and watching them work their magic. We've spoken at length with Ian about the crazy cool HDR photography these guys use in their Photographic novel: Night Zero.

I also had a chance to witness the infection spread as our friend Jana got her hands dirty and turned con-goer Jason from this...

to this...

and eventually to this...

If anyone in the neighborhood hasn't come down yet, do it. We're having a whole lot of fun here and we'd hate to have it all without you. Tomorrow is the last day and our trip just won't be quite right if we don't see you here.

Dead Island Super Review

David Brown

If you are an avid reader of the site, you will no doubt remember all of the fun coverage that we have had in regards to a little game by the name of Dead Island. We have brought you story points, videos, character info and even preorder bonus information. Now that the game is out none of that really matters. The one big question on everyone’s mind is whether or not the game is fun and worth the price of admission?

Before I get too far into this review let me make a few points. First, I played this game on the Xbox360 so there will be some differences in the quality from the PC or PS3 versions. I am also playing a version that has been updated with all of the latest patches, so a lot of the initial issues being reported have been fixed for the most part. I am also for the sake of this review going to be bypassing the online portion of the game in order to give you a more streamlined review.

Dead Island is ultimately what you make of it. Before you start to play it don’t think that this is going to be another Dead Rising or Left 4 Dead clone. Dead Island is ultimately a mix between action and RPG elements but more on this later. When you begin the game you are greeted by a cut-scene where you see the night when all hell breaks loose on the island, to the song “Who Do You Voodoo”. This scene does a good job of showing you all of the characters that you will soon be able to play as. The graphics in this scene do a good job of setting you up for what you will see throughout the game.

After the cut-scene you are taken to the character selection scene where you are able to choose between four different characters. You choice on this screen will help determine the way you will play and the weapons that you will best be able to utilize. Upon selecting your character you are placed in the resort hotel and the gameplay begins. You are introduced to the basic controls and then out of nowhere the infected attack and you are forced to flee. You are unprotected the whole time, so it is definitely a great moment when you first get to pick up a weapon and help fight off the infected.

The first question you are probably asking is how does the game control? There are two control methods to choose from: digital or analog. With the digital controls you utilize the right trigger to swing your weapon, whereas with the analog controls your swings coincide with your movements on the right analog stick. Most of my playtime was spent with the digital controls and I had no complaints. Controls seemed very responsive and I was able to hit all body parts that I was targeting when using either control option.

If there is one thing that this game excels at it is creating an atmosphere coherent with that of a great horror movie. There are many moments where you will be scared when an infected islander latches on to you and you must fight to free yourself from their grasp. The moment when you are going into a building or down a path and hear the moan of the infected is truly a nerve racking one indeed. Speaking of the infected, they come in both slow and fast varieties as well as a few special ones strewn about that truly make for some nerve racking situations.

Dead Island airs on the side of realism by utilizing a stamina system that many will find annoying at first (that is until you realize that kicking doesn’t use stamina). The weapons you pick up also have to be constantly repaired or they will break and you will be left to use your bare hands to take down the infected. These are a few minor annoyances that will serve to aggravate you until you can learn the intricacies of the game. One annoyance for many will be the respawn system. When you die you do not have to reload a checkpoint, you just lose money and are respawned near the point of your death with full health. The issue begins when you realize that you are left with weapons that have been used and may be unhelpful.

Another nice touch to the game is its leveling system. You gain experience as you kill the infected and complete quests so there is always something to do to ever push you forward. As you gain a level you not only get more life and stamina but you also get to select special skills from one of three categories to level up. There is a certain degree of grinding if you want to reach level 50, but there is always enough to keep you busy and entertained whether it be slicing through the infected with a customized machete or running through them with a reinforced vehicle.

The cut-scenes in the game are quite good, but there are minor graphical glitches from time to time. You will sometimes see a zombie stuck in a wall or clipping through a door. You will also notice that with your characters the kicking animations seem a bit off. Draw distances are sometimes off too resulting in graphics not fully rendering right away or having mountains pop-up out of nowhere. These are minor issues, but is one that needed to be touched upon There is also a bit of an issue where you will be playing by yourself one minute and then joined mysteriously by the other three characters during in game cut-scenes.

Overall this is a great game. Many of the glitches that occurred during the initial release have been patched to the point where they are no longer issues. To get the most out of this game you must go into it looking at it as an adventure game. You will be going through the game having to plan your kills and sometimes run from fights. Dead Island is a game where the simple run and gun will no longer work. You will find 20+ hours of fun killing the infected, crafting weapons, helping survivors and trying to survive your stay on the island. If you enjoy a good adventure game and the feeling of needing to survive at all costs then run out and pick up this game. Dead Island will make a great addition to the library of anyone with a PS3, XBOX360 or PC.

Dead Island Pre-order Incentives from Steam

David Brown

A few weeks ago we mentioned the Dead Isalnd pre-order incentives being offered by Gamestop here.  It seems that Steam is offering the same bonuses as Gamestop:

  • The Ripper: A baseball bat combined with a rotary saw
  • The Bloodbath Arena DLC is another pre-order bonus, and pits players against multiple waves of zombies.
  • The Sonic Pulse Grenade: A new weapon offered in conjunction with the Bloodbath Arena.
The game will cost $50 on Steam and $59.99 on XBOX360 and PS3.  Steam is offering an incentive in that buying four copies of the game will only cost $150 which will but the average cost per copy of the game to $37.50, a great deal if you can find the friends to go in on this with you.

As always, stay tuned to the site as we continue to receive more information on this game that looks to reinvent the zombie game genre.

Dead Island: Secret Origins

David Brown

If any of you are like me you will be asking yourself, how did the events of Dead Island get set into motion?  Well video game site Gamesradar.com might just have the answer.  Starting tomorrow, Tuesday, July 19th, they will be starting a web series in collaboration with Deep Silver to take a look at the Dead Island story in their own special way.  They make the promise that "Things are gonna get real bloody, real stupid, real quick". If you are interested take a look at this teaser trailer below.

We will keep you updated with videos as they are released and hopefully we can all get a bit more info on the back story for Dead Island, or at least the story as the people at Gamesradar see it. If you want to see more info for yourself you can do so by clicking here to check out their site, word has it they are even giving away a five night trip for two to the Bahamas.

Dead Island Cover Gets the Ban Hammer

Todd Jepperson

As you probably already know, Dead Island is the upcoming game title from Polish video game developer Techland to be released by Deep Silver for Windows, Xbox 360, and Playstation 3 and distributed by Square Enix. The game is currently set for release on the first of August, 2011, and here’s hoping that it stays that way.

Last week, we showed you the latest game play footage and just this week the cover art was released.

(click for bigger Zombies)

Just to be a rabble-rouser, I’m going to point out a little change that you may or may not have noticed. It seems that someone from one of the three groups named above either decided (or had decided for them) to ‘edit’ the official game logo.

I’m definitely one to keep my young kids away from things I think they probably shouldn’t view, but c’mon. The game is called Dead Island. Horror. Zombies. Layered melee combat. I don’t think you really had to cut the Zombie down to make it less offensive to the masses.

[June 10, 2011 Update: It appears the reason for the change was a prompting from the ESRB. The logo was edited not for any specific appearance it presented about a hanging Zombie, they were okay with that, but because those who didn't know what the game was about might see the logo and think it's a murder/suicide. They don't wanna put their stamp on anything that promotes either of the two, so the hangman's noose got the axe.]

Anyway, as new details are released, we’ll let you know. It looks like this summer is going to be a good one for Zombie hunting.

More Dead Island Footage Released

David Brown

If you are like me, you love video games and zombies. You also have probably played games like Stubbs the Zombie, Dead Rising, or the Left 4 Dead series. In the recent months we have started to see the resurgence of hype over the game Dead Island. The trailer for it has been recut and even reversed to show the pure level of chaos that has erupted on a resort island following a zombie outbreak. The game is being billed for its improvised weaponry, great melee damage modeling, and a huge living world with many different factions of survivors to interact with.

Many were originally worried that this would just turn into a run and gun type game that Left 4 Dead had become. The good thing is that footage in the video shows that this is a melee weapon heavy game. The inclusion of a stamina system also prevents this from being a game where you can just hack and slash your way through. You must choose every shot and swipe carefully as your stamina will drain and you will tire, becoming defenseless to the zombie hoards. The number of zombies in this game is just staggering at times.

As of now this game looks to be a true survival horror zombie game the like of which hasn’t truly been seen in many years. Keep your sights posted here for more information as it becomes available on this great game that is set to be released later this year. With gameplay that is promising to be 25-30 hours in length, a number of different character classes to play, weapon crafting/customization and some great multiplayer play, this looks to be a good step for zombies in video games and a great leap for the horror genre in gaming. So without further ado, we give you the footage. Enjoy!

Dead Island - A Dream Come True?

Recently, a trailer for an upcoming video game hit the interwebs and caused some excitement.  We first brought to your attention the zombie game, Dead Nation, last July.  The concept and screenshots were enough to make me giddy but this new video seals the deal.

Dead Island leaves you on a paradise island vacation spot when the dead rise.  A "sandbox" game, this free-roaming first person game has you exploring the entire island.  There is one little twist I recall reading before that leaves me questioning how the end result will turn out.  In Dead Island, you have the ability to transform yourself into a zombie temporarily.  I also recall hearing that the characters have "layers" which result in realistic physical damage as you strike the walking corpses.  Due for release sometime this year, rely on Zombies & Toys to continue bringing you updates.

Dead Nation Arriving on the PS3

Not too much info to report about this one but thought I'd put it on your radar. There looks to be a Sony Playstation 3 exclusive dual-stick shooter coming soon. By "dual stick", one controls your direction of movement and the other your direction of fire. Not my personal favorite but, hey, it does have zombies. Dead Nation is being developed by Housemarque.

I'll post more info as I encounter it. Whatever happened to Dead Island? Now that's a game I want to play!

Fort Zombie - A New Zombie Game

IGN has reported some information about a new zombie game hitting PCs this fall. Fort Zombie places you in the town of Piety, Indiana. It's an action RPG and you basically must find a building to be your fort through the game. You will spend most of your time fortifying your domicile while also performing various other tasks to build your character.

I'm not much of a PC gamer and hope we see something like this on the 360 or PS3. I love the idea of a more realistic RPG zombie survival game. Not completely sold on this one yet but I'm still psyched to see Dead Island.

Dead Island - New Zombie Game On The Horizon

I caught this from G4TV.com and the original article can be found here. What we have is a dream come true for video game zombie fans! It sounds like an open-ended (think Grand Theft Auto) game with zombies!

Dead Island takes place on what looks to be an island resort infested with zombies. More cool news; The game has a "layered skin system" that will allow you to hack away multiple dimensions of zombie flesh! Here is the game synopsis taken from ign.com:

"Island of Living Dead is a survival horror FPP shooter. The action takes place in an alternate near future, when all present day threats and fears have become a horrifying reality. As a castaway on a secluded island, you will struggle for your very life in a game filled with an atmosphere of overwhelming fear. Experience the extensive simulation of real-life physics for all environmental objects that can be used as weapons, and an innovative gameplay concept that allows you to temporarily transform into a zombie which changes both enemy behaviour and your character's abilities."

Not so sure about the transforming into a zombie part. Is it just me or does someone need to make just a straight-forward zombie game? Left 4 Dead has the special infected and that's not too bad. Besides, for what that game is trying to accomplish the special infected are pretty much needed. Even the Resident Evil games loose me once you get past the beginning zombie enemies and move into the monster things. Still, look at these pics, think about the idea of a sandbox style zombie game, and tell me you're not excited too.
