Terraria is one of those games that catches you off guard. It is one of the newest games from 505 games and has been out for quite a while on the PC, all the while developing quite a following. When it was announced that it was coming to Xbox Live and PSN there was much commotion from fans of the original. Well, rest assured that there is nothing to worry about.
So let's start by answering the main question on everyone's mind: what is Terraria? Well, simply put Terraria is a game of exploration, crafting, building and surviving. When I first got my hands on it, I noticed how similar it felt to another open world game, Minecraft. Terraria is a 2D game where you are thrown into a randomly generated world and tasked with surviving. You start with the basics: an axe, a pickaxe and a sword. These are the basics and will help you start. If you are unsure of what to do there is a guide that you can talk to for any questions you may have.
You will start out harvesting building materials and building shelter for yourself and your guide. Eventually you can even start mining for materials that will help you craft armor and weapons (that is, unless you find one or two rarities in your mining expeditions). The game controls very easily. For the transition from PC to consoles the developers have allowed auto-targeting to replace the precision of a mouse. The other thing that helps this game is the ease with which you can build and explore. I have found myself a few times losing hours to this game and I haven't even started deep exploration.
Now you must be asking yourself, why are we covering a game like this on here? Well, let me show you:
As I stated earlier this game is one of survival, so during the day you are building and mining and finding materials to craft with, but be careful once night hits because all the monsters start to come out. The first monster that I came across on my first night was none other than the Zombie and let me tell you, I wasn't prepared at all. They come one after the other in some cases and can easily overpower a beginner. Luckily you can barricade yourself in your dwelling for safety if you choose, or you can fight them for coins to buy items with. As you continue your journey you will encounter Giant Worms, World Devourers, Skeletons, Bats, Behemoth Skeletons and even a Wall of Flesh (that's right, a literal wall of flesh that can crush you to death).
There is a lot to do in this game and it definitely is a fun one if you want to kill some time. There is also the option to play with up to four players on one console through split screen play as well as to go online and play with others. If you are looking for a fun game to kill some time while you wait for World War Z or just a fun way to relax at the end of the day, look no further than Terraria, an unsurprising addition to your survival horror game collection. You can pick up Terraria on Xbox Live for 1200 Points ($15) or on Steam for ($9.99) today or you can wait for its eventual PSN release.
