Truth be told, I haven't checked in with Archie and company in at least 25 years. Things have certainly changed around Riverdale, and while that may be bad for the residents, it is great for us! This new series, written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa with art by Francesco Francavilla and lettering by Jack Morelli, answers the question, "what would happen if Riverdale was the beginning of the zombie apocalypse?"
The first issue lays the groundwork for what should be a fantastic mix of horror, pulp, and nostalgia. The story drops you right in on all of the old gang and hits the ground running. Even if you aren't familiar with all the characters the story is easy to pick up.
I have been a fan of Francavilla's artwork for a long time, and the style is perfect for this horror book. The bold oranges and purples provide a simple color scheme that also has a surprising amount of depth. I was lucky enough to get Francavilla's retail-only variant cover (remember kids, support your local comic shop!) which is grotesquely awesome.
I very much enjoyed where the story is taking us, and I am already looking forward to the next issue because the first one ends with a fantastic frame. This is definitely a title that will remain on my pull list as long as it is in existence. If you happen to see a copy of issue #1 on the shelves pick it up as fast as you can (but good luck since the entire first printing has sold out).
