The Original Walking Dead is Back for Season 6

Todd Jepperson

If you've been spending your Sunday nights wandering aimlessly through station after station of mindless evening television, this post is for you. The Walking Dead has shambled its way back and from what we're hearing, it's bringing more zombies with it than ever.

Although Fear the Walking Dead has been fun while we've been  waiting, the kickoff to this new season of the real deal was a 90 minute Ricktopian visit to Alexandria where peace has more-or-less settled on our favorite little band of survivors.

We're not in the business of spoiling things, so for episode recaps you'll have to ride the link over to variety.com. We just wanted to let you know that you can bring your weekends to a comfortable, plague-ridden close once more.

The Walking Dead "Survival Instinct" Update

David Brown

Many of you know about the game The Walking Dead by Telltale Games that has been releasing episodes for a few months now.  That game is a great game and is deserving of all of the praise that it has gotten thus far.  The biggest concern that a lot of people have had, including myself is that it included locations and characters from the show, but the protagonist was not one of those main few we were familiar with.

Activision is looking to change that next year with their newest video game inspired by "The Walking Dead". Titled "The Walking Dead 'Survival Instinct'" this game allows players to assume the role of Daryl Dixon.  According to Activision when describing the game:

It is a first-person survival title takes place within the universe of “The Walking Dead” and before the events of the AMC show, following Daryl and his brother Merle on a gruesome journey to reach the supposed safety of Atlanta as the world around them ends. Reedus and Rooker will bring life to their characters' desperate, unforgiving struggle against limited resources, the nightmarish walkers and, perhaps, their fellow survivors...

The best news of all came today when it was announced that Norman Reedus and Michael Rooker would be reprising their roles as Daryl and Merle for the game. This is exciting news and if it is an indicator of what is to come there is much excitement in the future.  Stay tuned to Zombies & Toys for continued coverage of The Walking Dead "Survival Instinct" and watch for the game to drop next year on Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and Windows PC.

The Walking Dead Introduces a New Board Game

Matt Boiselle

With internet and platform consoles dominating the gaming industry today, some purists long for the days of the good old time-consuming board games to occupy our family bonding moments. Well look no further, because the developers of the wildly popular World of Warcraft trading card game have just released The Walking Dead board game which is based on the hit TV series airing on the AMC channel.

The game is designed for anywhere from 1- 4 players, ages 15 and up, and lets you jump into the story as either Sheriff Rick Grimes, his best friend and partner Shane Walsh, Andrea, or a number of other survivors in a race against time to gather weapons and supplies while dodging zombies in an attempt to reach the holy grail that is the CDC. In addition to the possibility that players may need to turn on each other in the event that supplies run low, a twist has been thrown into the gameplay.

If your character starts to lag behind and becomes head course at the zombie feast, you can turn around as a newly inducted member of the undead and chase after the remaining survivors ! This can be done by springing surprise attacks and contaminating supplies, or even putting the bite on a former teammate and having them join you in pursuit of the living. This game forces you to strap on your thinking caps and rely on your most primitive survival skills, so for at least one night, shut off the computer and give the consoles a well- needed break, then crack open this game and prepare to see if you can survive The Walking Dead.

The Walking Dead Board Game is available now at most hobby stores and online at either Cryptozoic Entertainments or AMC's online shop.

Darabont Fired from "The Walking Dead"

Jason Meehan

It's been a few weeks since we first we reported on AMC's startling announcement; that the mastermind behind the network's most talked about series was leaving the project. While cast and crew scramble to continue production on season two of "The Walking Dead" reports are starting to surface that the director/producer did not step down willingly, he was fired by the network.

This seems to clear some of the confusion about why series creator Frank Darabont was at SDCC promoting his show just days before being ousted. It also paints the cable channel in a very sinister light. Stories are emerging of a cast meeting that took place with AMC executives on location in Atlanta where the crew was informed of the dismissal. "This isn't working," was all that was said to explain the cable channel's decision.

Other reports indicate that the network has been very aggressive in discouraging the crew from making any comments. So far Darabont and the cast have maintained a strict silence about this news and the severe impact it could have on future success for the show, apparently out of fear for their own futures on the series.

So why did AMC toss the man responsible for the highest rated show on their network? All indications point to huge budget cuts that Darabont was adamantly against. The second round of "The Walking Dead", which is to have twice as many episodes, is being made using less than was spent to create the shorter premiere season.

What is to become of the drama that has single handedly brought zombies out of the horror genre and into the main stream? For starters we may hear more and see less of the undead just to save some bucks on makeup. Severed fingers are still crossed, but if the show falters, AMC will have a tidal wave of angry fans turning off their HDTV's (and cheering Darabont's name.)

Addy Miller Interview from Mayhem

Gnat

I knew when I walked in to the Wyndham, to meet Addy and her mom, we were instantly going to be friends. It was the Thursday before Mayhem and we had been in the hot sun at Gatorland all day. I did not look like a person coming to interview them but they didn’t seem to mind at all. When we walked in, Addy and her Mom were relaxing in the lobby and were immediately inviting. It was like we had been friends for a while and were just getting to see each other on vacation. We talked about what we wanted to do and then headed to Addy’s room (where I proceeded to give her a doll I had made and some great Zombies and Toys swag. In return, she gave us some signed pictures for our personal collections).

We decided to go and get something to eat, because we were all starving. We ended up at a pizza place and I was amazed at how humble both Addy and her mom were about her status as a celebrity. At the pizza place, they were wearing Spooky Empire shirts and neither of them wanted to let anyone know who Addy was. The basic philosophy they carry is, “Addy is fortunate to be able to do something most kids will not get to do. She is not a celebrity nor famous just a kid who got to do something really cool.” I appreciate that outlook and it was nice to see that even though Addy is a celebrity, she is also a normal kid. She loves to do normal kid things like soccer. The last night of the event, she showed us some of her skills when she, and the other kids from The Walking Dead, invented a game called “Awesome Ball” (Steven Yeun was also in on this game). That evening Addy and my niece played as I spoke with her mom (we talked just like two moms hanging out). Eventually, we had to say goodbye and promised to see them the next day at Mayhem.

The next day when we walked into the celebrity room, we headed to Addy’s table and were received with hugs and hellos. Addy put out some of our Zombies and Toys cards on her table and was wearing her swag that we had given her the night before. She was so sweet and laid back. She and my niece became fast friends and played the entire weekend. We were all sad, on the last day, when we had to see them go. We vowed to stay in touch, and so far have kept that promise.

I also had the distinct pleasure of asking Addy a few questions, the interview went as follows:

What is your most memorable moment from your experience on The Walking Dead?
The stunts for sure! I loved doing the stunts. I also liked seeing Frank Darabont's reaction and being so happy from my scene! He would actually jump up and yell and I could tell he liked what I was doing. Everyone on set laughed. If I didn't have on all the makeup, everyone would have seen me smiling too!

How long did the makeup application take and what was that experience like?
Well, I had two people working on me in the makeup trailer (Garrett Immel and Andy Schoneburg), and that took about 2 1/2 hours. Then once I got to set, Greg (Nicotero) worked on me for another half an hour. It is actually more relaxing than you think. I just sit there and close my eyes and try not to fall asleep. As for wearing it? Well I think I had it on for about 7 hours that day, and it made it very hard to talk and eat. It was a bit uncomfortable, and I drooled all day long, which was definitely the worst part! (let me add here that Greg Nicotero and Addy's mom told me about this makeup, and it was no easy thing to wear. She was a super trooper!)

How did you come to be cast as the "zombie girl"? What did the audition consist of?
Actually I was contacted by casting to come in and audition. I think someone had seen me in another project I had done or had been submitted for, I'm not really sure. The casting people wouldn't tell us what it was for, they just gave a description of how to tape my audition. So my mom taped me and sent it in, and about a week later I learned they had cast me. I had to look "hungry" in my eyes and walk toward the camera - but with no makeup on - that was it!

Have you read TWD comics? What books or magazines do you enjoy?
Yes. Once I was cast, I went out and got the first volume and my mom and I read them (her reading it first, then me in case there is something I shouldn't see). Now we own all 13 volumes! I also like the Ramona book series and Monster High books.

Do you have any other exposure to zombies such as movies, books, or games?
If so, what are your favorites?
I had actually been a zombie before in another movie, an indie called One Last Sunset. Other than that, no, I have not seen other zombie films or books other than The Walking Dead. But now I love zombies. I have a zombie calendar that I can make zombie puppets from, I have the zombie Monster High doll, and the DS game called Plants vs. Zombies . I also play Zombie Farm on my mom's iPhone.

Do you find zombies scary or do you think being a part of "movie magic" just makes them another day at work?
It is just another day at work. I don't see it as scary at all, probably because I was one of them first. Just people in makeup.

Do you go to a public school? What do your friends and classmates think of your career or your zombie appearance?
No, I'm home schooled now, but I used to go to a private school. My close friends have seen a picture from The Walking Dead and are like "Is that you?" (laughing). They think it is very creepy, but they are very supportive of me and my career. To be honest, we don't really talk about it very much, since they have been my friends longer than I have been an actress.

Is there a chance we may see you in the series again? Maybe as a survivor?
I would love that! I really do not know what the show has planned for the future, we will have to wait and see.

Let's say that you are in the show again only this time as a survivor. If you were given a choice as to which toy they could make, zombie or survivor, which would you choose? What accessories would you come with?
Wow! Ok. Well, couldn't they do both? (smiling). It is hard to choose when I have only been one character. If they made my Little Girl Walker into a doll, she would definitely need to come with the bunny slippers and teddy bear!

Speaking of toys, what are some of your current and past favorites and why?
Well right now I really like Monster High Dolls and LIV dolls. I used to collect My Little Pony, Littlest Pet Shop, and Webkinz when I was younger. I LOVE horses and have a ton of horse figurines and stuffed animals. To me they are just so beautiful and graceful.

The Millers are a joy to meet, and if you get the chance you should do so. They will be making appearances at Wizard World Philadelphia on June 17-19, Fright Night Film Fest on July 22-24, Wizard World Chicago on August 11-14, DragonCon in Atlanta September 2-5 and the Nashville Comic and Horror Convention October 1-2. I highly suggest you get out to see her and get something signed!

Addy will also has 2 feature films coming out soon the first is titled “Remnants” and will be out in fall of this year. Check out their Facebook page to keep up with the latest news on this film. She is also working on another film called “Plan 9” (It’s an Ed Wood remake so I am sure it will be a classic!). Addy can also be seen on the tv show “Ghost Trek” and you can check out their Facebook page here. If you want to check out Addy’s acting chops from the past check out her IMDB page.

Addy is an amazing and talented young lady. She needs our support to become the big star I know she is. Go see her; whether it be on film or in person. To keep up with everything coming up for her go and “like” her Facebook fan page You will be sorry if you don’t!

Head to head with The Walking Dead

Todd Jepperson

So, AMC’s new original show The Walking Dead is the new Titanic of TV. After only the first three airings of its premier, the show attracted over 8 million breathers, who knows how many undead, and earned a 6.0 household rating along the way. I’ve read some reports which were obviously embellished; but one thing is a fact, it was the most watched show on any cable network so far this year; possibly ever.

Which is why I was surprised to come across an article on Chicagonow.com called, ‘The Walking Dead’ is the Most Overrated Show on Television. Because I’m a rhetorical person by nature, I thought I’d take a seat and hear them out. Y’know, in the pursuit of civility.

“In the wake of all the hype, however, including a recent Entertainment Weekly cover that read "The Best New Show on TV," I feel as if I should do my part to put the breaks (sic) on. Not only is "The Walking Dead" overrated, but it actually kind of sucks.”

Okay, I see his angle now. You have to be bold when you attack popular opinion. I get that. Go on…

“When the writers do make an attempt to develop character, it can be so stilted and awkward, you want to DVR forward. Two blonde sisters sit in a boat talking about their father taking them fishing, and when one of them gets zombie-bit later you're cheering because you don't have to listen to another maudlin conversation (ack, but the other sister lives...).”

Stilted, awkward, blonde, maudlin, and ack. First, what the hell does maudlin mean, Google? “Self-pityingly or tearfully sentimental, often through drunkenness.” Okay two drunk blondes are sitting in a boat… sounds like the beginning of a bad joke, or a dirty movie.

The author goes on to say it’s pretty much just like Lost, only less interesting and with a weaker talent pool. He then says "’The Walking Dead’ is basically every zombie movie cliché with zero innovation to fill the gaps.” He goes so far as to call Robert Singleton’s character “T-dog” the token black guy. His wraps up by saying a story like this can’t go on without living characters to do all of the work, and you have to be able to attach to them for you to keep watching the show. He calls it “nap-worthy” and quotes a few of his bizarre friends (his words, not mine) who say the show sucks.

Okay, so there’s the challenger. In this corner, we have an article on Flicksided.com titled “Why the Walking Dead Works.” (Again, link.) In his opening line, the author comes out strong by saying, “If you’re not watching AMC’s new zombie series The Walking Dead, based on the comic book of the same name, you are doing yourself a great disservice.”

Nice, but why is that, exactly?

“Record-breaking ratings and an overwhelming positive audience response has turned it into the most talked about show of the year… If any story was perfect for serialized television it would be a zombie apocalypse.”

Agreed. Please continue.

“There are several reasons why The Walking Dead deserves high praise: quality special effects, buckets of blood and gore, solid cast, excellent scripting and a terrific music score from composer Bear McCreary are just a few. While all these things make the series watchable, they aren’t what makes it work on a dramatic level. What makes it work is the impending sense of doom that envelops every episode.”

“All good post-apocalyptic stories, be it Battlestar Galactica or The Road Warrior, include the palpable risk of death at every turn. Creating a world consumed with fear and hopelessness maintains tension throughout. There is little room for the characters to breathe. The audience becomes heavily invested in anticipation of when the next attack will occur and which of the core principals will meet an untimely end.”

So, although the cast is solid and well scripted, what really drives the story is the sense of impending doom; the zombie element? Interesting…

“Whatever direction the creators decide to take the plot, the specter of death will never be far behind. It’s rare to find television that’s willing to delve into uncomfortable subject matter. Horror, in particular, has always had trouble translating on the small screen. Vampires, werewolves and demons have made the jump with varying degrees of success, but none of those supernatural incarnations possess the allure of zombies. Needless to say, a series like The Walking Dead has been long overdue.”

Alright, this was never a fair fight. I was planning to jump in all along. In his defense, the first author came in here and stood his ground. He deserves respect for rising to the challenge.

So, zombie nation, what do you think? Is The Walking Dead far better in comic book form, or is it, in fact, one of the greatest shows to ever hit TV. Let us know in the comments below, or send an email to todd@zombiesandtoys.com. We’ll post a follow up in a week or so when a definitive answer is clear.

An Early Review of The Walking Dead Series

David Brown

I was overjoyed to receive an advanced copy of the new series the Walking Dead from AMC and Director Frank Darabont. I have to be up front when I say this; this series is set to redefine the way that zombies interact with television. I will describe my happiness by retelling the first few minutes. In the beginning, we see the main character Rick walking amongst the burnt out and crashed remains of many cars as he happens upon an abandoned gas station. He is alone, or so he thinks until he hears shuffling footsteps. It is then that he gets on the ground and looks beneath cars to see the shambling legs as they approach a teddy bear. Hands reach down and pick up the bear to clutch it close. He then gets up to venture around the car to see a young girl in a robe shambling away. He calls to her checking to see if she needs help to which she turns around and we get the first glimpse of a zombie from The Walking Dead. I will go no further as what happens must be seen to believe.

Keep in mind the above description is the first few minutes. It is this sense of urgency and the fact that everything is told from the views of regular people. There are no super cops here, only a real man thrust into a situation that he has no comprehension of, or control over. As characters are introduced we see that there is much potential for the series. The casting here is spot on and really seems to get the right actors to portray the characters. Rick is thrust into the world of the zombie apocalypse after awakening from a coma as a result of injuries in a shootout. The story moves along at such a brisk pace that you cannot help but be glued to the screen as the introduction to everything plays out. I can give nothing but praise to this series.

The costumes and sets truly mirror those of the graphic novel and truly bring in not only fans of the series but zombie lovers, and drama lovers alike. This is a zombie series, but also includes enough drama as the human condition is examined. The makeup and zombie effects are in the spotlight here and truly bring so much here. Never before on television have zombies been given so much life. The makeup is discomforting as you see the ravaging effects of a virus such as this one. There are also many instances where you truly feel as scared, tense, and claustrophobic as the characters in the drama themselves. I don’t want to go into too many details of the show or its makeup and creature designs, but from the images we have already been shown, rest assured that this is one series that doesn’t disappoint.

Even though I have only had the chance to see one episode, I am happy to say that this is going to be a much needed revival for zombies in the mainstream. This will be the must watch show of the season on AMC. The actual premiere of the show will be Sunday October 31st at 10:00PM and the pilot is slated to run around 90 minutes on television. It will be interesting to see how the show plays out and where it goes from here. The pilot is so full of potential that one can only look on with anticipation as the series progresses. There will be action, there will be drama, there will be moments of sadness, and there will be Zombies. Make sure you do not miss this event as it is a great show that everyone will love.

The Walking Dead Already Shambling Into Second Season

AMC has already picked up a 13 episode second season of it's comic book adaptation, The Walking Dead!  This is before a single frame has even been shown on television!  Empire was able to bring us other great news about the upcoming second season.  For starters, it will begin filming in February.  Director, Frank Darabont, had much to say about bringing us the second season:

“It would be great not just to get out of the heat, but to present a different idea to the audience visually and tonally by having it be winter. There’s some really cool stuff that Kirkman did, where they find the one zombie that’s frozen to the ground. I’d never seen that before and that’s really cool.”

And who can forget Michonne?

“When she shows up – and boy, is she a character I can’t wait to get to – when she comes striding out of the wasteland like a Clint Eastwood f***ing spaghetti Western character cross-melded with some samurai movie, like the Baby Cart character with the f***ing sword, and there’s just a little drift of snow in the air. I would love to put that on film.”

I can honestly say that I have not been this excited for something zombie related.  It's going to take some serious effort to mess this one up.  And if we get stuck with an actor who stinks?  They get killed.  Because the comic has already proven that nobody is sacred.

The Walking Dead Cast Photo

Is it October yet? I mean, seriously. I'm not a fan of summer as it is. I hate being hot, don't like cutting the grass, I sweat easily, I love the fall.... and the months just seem endless with each new update about this series. With each new tidbit, I also become more convinced that this series will be a defining moment for zombie fans. Oh, and for the record, Jeff likes the books!
So, AMC has brought us the first official cast image of The Walking Dead. Pictured, from left, are Emma Bell ("Frozen") as Amy, Jon Bernthal ("The Pacific," "The Ghost Writer") as Shane, Steven Yeun as Glenn, Sarah Wayne Callies ("Prison Break") as Rick's wife Lori, Chandler Riggs ("Get Low") as Carl, Andrew Lincoln ("Love, Actually," "Teachers") as police officer Rick Grimes, Jeffrey DeMunn ("The Green Mile") as Dale and Laurie Holden ("Shield") as his girlfriend Andrea.

New 'The Walking Dead' Pics

Maybe I should change the name of this blog to "The Walking Dead Television Series and Maybe Some News About Toys With Additional Zombie News If Time Permits". It does kinda have a nice ring to it, doesn't it? Again, if you're sick of hearing news about AMC's The Walking Dead series it's only because you haven't read it. And TWD news is still pouring in!

First, Jeff has finally decided to read the comics! Check us out on FaceBook to see what he has to say. Possibly even more exciting, however, is Ain't It Cool News has posted an on-the-set feature! Check out part one and part two. These features include two brand-spankin' new pics!
They have NAILED the zombies! These things are spot-on! The makeup, the costume, the vibe... I can't get enough. If any readers stumble upon some news I haven't found, please drop me an email at zombiesandtoys@gmail.com so that we can share it.

Robert Kirkman Talks About "The Walking Dead" Television Series

Can you think of a better way to start a Monday than reading an interview with Robert Kirkman? You can? Okay. What if he's talking about AMC's upcoming The Walking Dead series? I thought so.

Fall cannot get here quickly enough for me. The only people who can't be excited to witness this amazing comic come to life are those who haven't read it (ahem, Jeff). The more I read about it the more certain I am that it is getting done right. Head over to AMC to read the full interview. There are some spoilers contained but nothing that will surprise those of us who read the comic.

Here are some excerpts:

"Everyone is really trying to do good by the comic, and there are scenes that are straight out of it. I think that fans are just going to be thrilled. But at the same time, [Frank Darabont] is vastly improving the material. And there are things here and there that along the way I should have caught, but didn't."

"Steven Yeun, the actor playing Glenn, was on set for the first time yesterday. He walked over and said hello to Andrew Lincoln. They were chatting, and I looked over and I was like, 'That's Rick talking to Glenn!' "

"It's non-stop awesome over here at the set of The Walking Dead."

"The Walking Dead" - A Whole Mess of Info!

Updates on AMC's adaptation of Robert Kirkman's "The Walking Dead" is pouring in faster than I can keep on top of it. Not that I'm complaining. With each bit of info I receive, I become more convinced that it will live up to my expectations. Enough rambling, how about some updates?

The role of Rick Grimes' son, Carl, has been cast! Chandler Riggs is an Atlanta local where The Walking Dead is currently being filmed. His previous credits include "Get Low" and "The Wronged Man". Yeah, I haven't heard of them either. I think Chanlder looks the part. Now, let's just hope he can act.

The second production still has also been released. This time, we're getting a look at Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes. In case you missed it earlier, follow this link to view the first production still of an amazing looking zombie.

Finally, Ain't It Cool News posted a bunch of pics taken during the filming of the series. A reader's bedroom window overlooks the set and he sent in the photographs. Keee-ripes, man! If that were my room, I wouldn't be able to leave! Scroll down to view all of the pics because every stinkin' one is worth viewing.

Will AMC's "The Walking Dead" Zombies Run?

Frank Darabont is bringing us what may possibly be (and if not, should) the most anticipated zombies to grace our televisions. "The Walking Dead" is the gospel of zombie stories. Well, at least I think so. The point is, there is a lot riding on Darabont's ability to bring the fans what they want. Fans of the comic will be scrutinizing and no doubt new fans will be eagerly awaiting the verdict. One question on most everyone's mind is this: Will The Walking Dead's walking dead walk or will they run?

There's a great Q&A on the AMC site with Frank Darabont that I suggest you all go read. But to answer the question on all of your minds... well, let us allow Mr. Darabont to explain:

"There are the folks who just can't stand seeing zombies running. I'm kind of in that camp, but if you look at the very first zombie in Night - the one in the cemetery chasing Barbara, he gets up to a pretty good jog. I'm keying our zombie behavior off of that film: Whether they're in a very languid state or they're on the attack, they'll move no faster than that first zombie in Night of the Living Dead."

AMC's The Walking Dead Zombies

AMC has released some photos from the upcoming The Walking Dead television series! Set to air this October, The Walking Dead could possibly be one of the greatest things to happen to zombie fans. The images definitely do not disappoint and only get me more excited to see this amazing comic come to life! More news as it's available.

Thanks to Phil for the heads-up!

Vote for Your Favorite Zombie

AMC is running a poll asking you to vote for the movie that has spawned the best zombies. You cast your votes and see if your selections are the majority winners. This fun way to voice your opinion launches with these two contenders:

Night of the Living Dead (1968)

Planet Terror (2007)

To me, this one's a no-brainer! The fun only begins with those two. But go cast your vote and let your voice be heard!
