Skylander Giants Review

David Brown
For those of us whom are zombie fans, the Activision company name is one that is synonymous with the decimation of the hoardes of the undead.  They have built a name from the Call of Duty franchise and further broadened their horizons with the Zombies subgame that many of us have played and loved. They are now bringing us a game that younger generations can enjoy while we mow through the undead mencae.

Last year Activision released Skylanders Spyro's Adventure for the Wii, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 to cater to younder audiences. It was a big hit because of its great gameplay and the interchangeable characters that could be purchased to expand your game.  This month they have released Skylanders Giants, a game which they are anticipating to be a hot seller this holiday season.

In Skylanders Giants, players assume the role of the portal master as they utilize their skylanders in order to battle the evil Portal Master Kaos and his many minions. This time around Activision has added 16 new characters, new LightCore technology and new worlds to explore.  This begs the question, is it fun to play?
The game is compatible with last year's game, but if you haven't played before, you will need to pick up a starter kit, which features a portal (a shown above), the game and three characters.  The portal is your method of transporting characters into the game world.  It is interesting to see it glow with "power" as it is plugged in to your gaming system.  When you begin the game you are instructed to pick one of your Skylanders and place them on the portal. Upon doing so, they are scanned into the game world and you are ready to play.

The figures themselves all hold the information about their in-game progress. This is intriguing as you can level your characters up and take them to another place where the game is and all of your character information will be accessible, this includes leveling information as well as gold supply.  These figures are a fun form of collectible that is not only fun to look at but useful in game as well.  The figures are detailed and you can tell care was put into their design.  But this means nothing if the gameplay is not up to par.

The controls in Skylanders Giants are simplified to accomidate younger players. The face buttons are responsible for the various attacks and the control stick moves your character around.  This is not a game of platforming prowess, but more-so one of strategy and proper character utilization.  In each level, you have objectives, not only for level completion, but for item collection and overall efficiency.  There are certain areas that can only be accessed by certain Skylanders, so this can cause some problems if you don't have certain characters.  There are eight different character types and unfortunately in the starter pack you only get three, so there will be areas of the game world that you cannot access.

Skylanders is a game not only of action, but of good puzzle solving skills.  There are a number of areas where you must unlock doors that are locked with puzzles or create paths to get through the level and these offer a good challenge while not turning away any specific player groups.  The atmosphere is kid friendly as their are many bright shiney color and the dialogue, while sometimes repetitive, is enjoyable by younger audiences.  I found myself having a lot of fun with this game despite it being for younger audiences.

If you have children and want a game that isn't overly violent for them, get this game.  It will give them something fun to play while you are erradicating zombies in Call of Duty.  Skylanders is available now from Activision on the Xbox 360, Wii, 3DS and Playstation 3. It will also be available for the Wii U system in the future. It may not have zombies (although it does have an undead class), but it is still a fun diversion for kids and adults alike.

Animales de la Muerte

Todd Jepperson

Back in 2008, High voltage software announced a WiiWare exclusive title: Animales de la Muerte (animals of death). In the game, players would find a distressed zookeeper in Mexico loading up his young visitors with automatics and sub-machine guns to help him take care of his pest problem. Along the way, your weapons get stronger and there’s the occasional rescue mission.

The reason we’re telling you about it again today? It’s not just for WiiWare anymore! …possibly. at. all.

"It could very well be for WiiWare, as well," said Eric Nofsinger, Chief Creative Officer at High Voltage. "We did some WiiWare stuff ( Gyrostarr, High Voltage Hot Rod Show) and it did okay. We didn't lose money on any of that. But I would say it wasn't encouraging enough that we would be doing a ton of stuff [on WiiWare]."

High Voltage just announced that Animales de la Muerte is coming to Xbox Live Arcade, Playstation Network, and Steam. PETA be warned, many zombie animals will be harmed during the presentation of this game.

Keep your eyes on the lookout for updates, which we should have after the Developer’s conference next month. As we hear about it, you’ll hear about it. Enjoy the Trailer below, and for some great screencaps, check out trueachievements.com.

Zombie Panic in Wonderland

Todd Jepperson

The Spanish company Akaoni Studio has released a free demo for their number one rated WiiWare game: Zombie Panic in Wonderland (ed note: originally seen 6/3/09), for a limited time, starting on November 5th.  The free demo is available only on Nintendo’s WiiWare channel in Europe.  That’s the bad news.  The good news is, in the states, it’s still available; only you have to drop 1000 Wii points to get it.  Now, my Wii won’t live with me until Next month, so I can’t say how the game is from my personal experience, but what I can do is direct you to a bunch of different places you can find out what other people think of it.

The first place I wanna take you is to the Akaoni Studio website, found here.  If you look to your right, what you’ll see is poorly translated information about the release of the game, free wallpapers, and tidbits about other games they’re working on.  Come for the information, stay for the wallpapers.

Next, I’ll lead you over to a pretty in depth review of the game on Nintendolife.  For those of you are a little too busy at the moment to take the jump, The premise of the game is that “amorous zombies” are running wild in the fairytale world of Wonderland.  It’s up to Momotarō (“Peach boy” from Japanese folklore) and his rag-tag group of vigilantes, including Grimm’s Fairytales’ Snow White, and Wizard of Oz’s Dorothy, to stop these terrible monsters from hugging everyone into annoyed oblivion.  The game is a third person style shooter where the player controls the left to right movement of the character to avoid rocks, debris, and undead snuggles and aiming their weapons at enemies and various landscape objects through a series of time trial like levels.  The art is slightly cherubic with a manga influence, and the entire set is destructible.  Sounds like a pretty good time with the kids.

If you’re still not ready to fly to la casa de Mamá Ros back in España just yet, nor blow 1000 of your hard earned Wii points, I dug up a trailer we can all enjoy.

Rock of the Dead

I am truly at a loss for words...

So you take Guitar Hero (or Rock Band), add zombies, throw in some gameplay from the likes of Typing of the Dead and House of the Dead and you have Rock of the Dead. The bottom line is you play your guitar to defeat zombies.

This intentionally cheesy game from Epicenter will be for the Wii with a "budget" price of $30 to $40. The main character will be voiced by Neil Patrick Harris and will also star Felicia Day as the love interest. Speaking of Neil and Felicia... go watch yourself some Dr. Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog.

We can expect to see Rock of the Dead late spring or early summer. For more details, head over to IGN.com. In the meantime, enjoy some pics and a clip:

Zombie Panic - More Zombie Video Games

Looks like yet another zombie-laden game snuck under my raidar. Zombie Panic in Wonderland is the title of the Wii game we should see by year's end. It is the first title to be released by Akaoni Studios.

Zombie Massacre: New Wii Exclusive Slaughterfest!

It looks like the Wii is growing up. It seems more and more titles I need to exlude my kids from are getting released. Not that I'm complaining. I mean, who doesn't want a game where you and three of your friends can drive around hitting and shooting zombies with a nuclear bomb strapped to the back!

You read that last part right. It sounds like the game is basically one person driving and the other three shooting masses of zombies while trying to deliver a bomb to the center of town. Along the way, you can pick up upgrades to the car you are driving. And just to keep things interesting, one of the playable characters is rapper/actor DMX. It has also been said that Uwe Boll will not only be doing a movie adaptation but will also appear in the game as a zombie.

1988 Games may be onto something with this on. Crazy Taxi with zombies and three drunk friends? Where do I sign?
