ZOMBIES are back on top!

Todd Jepperson

ZOMBIES are still knocking them dead in ratings, at least with the kids.

The ratings have been released and the new Disney Channel musical ZOMBIES was the top live and same day cable program with kids, tweens, and teens. But what may be even more surprising, it ranked number five in overall viewership. This says a lot, considering that the shambling messes were in direct competition with the extremely nimble athletes performing on the world stage of NBC's Winter Olympic coverage. All that competition, and they still gnawed their way in to the number five spot. The plague only knows how much better ZOMBIES would have done on any other night.

This new offering pits relative newcomers Milo Manheim and Meg Donnely at seemingly impossible odds; one zombie and one cheerleader. What begins as a strange friendship grows into a sweet insight into what it means to be accepting and kind, even with our differences.

Now we wait to see how the show does in stream and replay numbers. What is certain, though, is that the people still love some good old fashioned living-dead.

REVIEW: Lizzie Borden, Zombie Hunter

Sara Ross

Lizzie Borden took an axe
And gave her mother forty whacks.
When she saw what she had done,
She gave her father forty-one.
-Anonymous

Most of us are familiar, to some degree, with the story of Lizzie Borden. Though Lizzie was the primary suspect in her father and stepmother’s murders, the events surrounding the day of the murders of Andrew and Abby Borden were debatable, the police investigation was full of careless mistakes, and Lizzie’s testimony was riddled with inconsistencies. This leaves plenty of room for speculation, theories, and the penning of a novel that presents an alternate explanation for the Borden murders. Lizzie Borden, Zombie Hunter, the upcoming novel by C.A. Verstraete explores one such hypothesis. What if there was more to the story than an angry daughter killing in cold blood? Maybe Lizzie knew something few others did, and taking the lives of her stepmother and father was the only way to protect herself and prevent being infected with a horrible, mutilating “sickness.”

Based on historical details and reports from newspapers of the time, Verstraete has incorporated much factual information from 1892-1893 when the Borden murders and Lizzie’s inquisition and trial took place. Many of the characters in the novel are actual players in Lizzie’s life, and the general timeframe and unfolding of events remains correct. However, Lizzie Borden, Zombie Hunter does take some liberties in tweaking and developing some of the character relationships, while shifting focus from some of the strained relationships between Lizzie and certain family members. Many aspects and details in the story are accurate and are in the order they actually occurred; however, Verstraete does add in a number of fictional events. Most notably being the inclusion of zombies, as the title reveals.

Though the term “zombie” is not mentioned (aside from the title) until two thirds of the way through the book, the undead make an early appearance. Lizzie finds her stepmother, Abby, acting strangely at the beginning of the novel. Lizzie’s description of her appearance, actions, and the scene found in the bedroom when checking in on her make it clear that things are not “right,” and Abby is a zombie. This leads to Lizzy’s murdering her in an act of self defense--if you can call it murder when the victim’s already dead! When Lizzy encounters her father shortly after, it’s clear he’s afflicted the same way as his (doubly) late wife. From there, Verstraete’s novel reveals a growing undead population, which a society of zombie hunters is working hard to keep covered up. As Lizzie works with the defense for her trial, she becomes familiar with the society’s work. Lizzie’s older sister Emma remains a steadfast ally through the trial, and she also becomes involved in the zombie fighting. Both sisters dig through mountains of paperwork and follow a trail through all parts of the city to uncover their father’s secret business dealings in hopes of discovering what happened to their father and stepmother. Lizzie and Emma uncover some of their Father’s secret, nefarious business operations, and find out that the truth is much more gruesome than they had imagined. Both sisters end up paying a steep price for uncovering the truth.

While Verstraete crafted a good story based on historic events, there were some areas of the novel that could use more detail and fleshing out. I found several instances where I felt the story had some jumps, or required the reader to make assumptions, in order to fill in gaps. Several times, characters “disappeared” from the novel without any notice, or were suddenly and inexplicably absent from a scene, when it seems they should’ve been there (or it should be mentioned as to why they were not). I remain puzzled about the time Lizzie et al spent searching for a character named Adelaide, when in the end, it did not seem to add much to the story; additionally, it was not clear how the Adelaide they found was the person they were seeking. Another example of one of these “gaps” has to do with Lizzie’s understanding of zombies. Though she knows she is dealing with a sickness, before she fully understands what it is, Lizzie just knows that it’s transferrable by bite. I found myself getting hung up on some of these types of things, rereading sections to ensure I didn’t somehow miss crucial details.

Despite these issues, I still found myself moving pretty quickly through the book and wanting to find out what was going to happen next. I was rooting for Lizzie, an underdog character, who was also a super-strong female lead. What I appreciated the most about Lizzie Borden, Zombie Hunter was the historical fiction aspect. I enjoyed the inclusion of historical details in the novel, and I was pleased to reach the end of the book and find that Verstraete provides a fairly extensive resource list. There are websites, books, films, and more covering everything from the newspaper accounts of events to where Lizzie’s pets were buried. I took some time to check out a few links before writing my review of the book. Coming in at about 175 pages, Lizzie Borden, Zombie Hunter is a nice, easy read. The novel is due out in August from Imajin Books, so add it to your end-of-summer reading list. It’s a nice combination of history and science fiction, with a healthy dose of zombies and gore.  Verstraete also adds in some romance and a touch of suspense, so there’s a bit of something for everyone to appreciate!

Plants Vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2 Preview

Todd Jepperson

Next week’s follow-up to the genre bending Plants Vs. Zombies Garden Warfare has been given the full treatment. No longer the simple tower-defense style mobile game, Garden Warfare 2 is being called something akin to Nintendo’s Spitoon meets Call of Duty.

The beta has been reviewed a couple of times, and each reviewer has come to the same conclusion: although it looks like this game is for kids, it’s definitely fun to play and offers serious interactions for even the serious gamer.

Plants include Citron, a giant orange-like plant with the ability to knock zombies over or blast them to nothing with a beam of energy. Also, there is Rose, who has the power to turn zombies into goats. But my favorite, Kernel Corn, has gone all out with machine guns for arms.

There are a couple of new zombies in the mix. Super Brainz is an undead Superman/Ryu cross who is a monster of close-combat.Captain Deadbeard is a pirate zombie with a remote control parrot. There’s even a little guy called Imp who’s very fast, but also pretty weak until he jumps into his Z-mech.

Combine all of this with 12 brand new maps and a whole bunch of free, downloadable extras and Plants Vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2 looks to be one game you won’t want to miss.

For a full review of the beta, jump on over to Metro.co.uk where the feeling is that Garden Warfare 2 is “coming up roses.”

Jane Austen, Hollywood Stars, and Zombies Oh My!

Todd Jepperson

(KEVIN WINTER/GETTY)

The undead horde grew to record breaking numbers last weekend when they invaded Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, CA. Bringing with them the brightest stars from the upcoming film adaptation of Jane Austen/Seth Grahame-Smith’s Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, they packed the theatre to the walls and grabbed the Guinness World record for most zombies reading Jane Austen at the same time.

The A-listers showed up in their trendy best, but the zombies were clad in the disastrous ruins of once magnificent Romanticist gowns and Dapper period suits. By all accounts, everyone had a shambling good time. The stars aligned to present attendees with photo opportunities and even prizes for best makeup and costume.

Interestingly enough though, everyone’s got a copy of the 1813 Jane Austen book and not the 2009 Seth Grahame-Smith adaptation that the upcoming movie is actually based on. In case you have forgotten, or haven’t read the book, here’s the blurb from the back:

“So begins Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, an expanded edition of the beloved Jane Austen novel featuring all-new scenes of bone-crunching zombie mayhem. As our story opens, a mysterious plague has fallen upon the quiet English village of Meryton--and the dead are returning to life! Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet is determined to wipe out the zombie menace, but she’s soon distracted by the arrival of the haughty and arrogant Mr. Darcy. What ensues is a delightful comedy of manners with plenty of civilized sparring between the two young lovers--and even more violent sparring on the blood-soaked battlefield. Can Elizabeth vanquish the spawn of satan? And overcome the social prejudices of the class-conscious landed gentry? Complete with romance, heartbreak, swordfights, cannibalism, and thousands of rotting corpses, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies transforms a masterpiece of world literature into something you’d actually want to [see].”

The Original Walking Dead is Back for Season 6

Todd Jepperson

If you've been spending your Sunday nights wandering aimlessly through station after station of mindless evening television, this post is for you. The Walking Dead has shambled its way back and from what we're hearing, it's bringing more zombies with it than ever.

Although Fear the Walking Dead has been fun while we've been  waiting, the kickoff to this new season of the real deal was a 90 minute Ricktopian visit to Alexandria where peace has more-or-less settled on our favorite little band of survivors.

We're not in the business of spoiling things, so for episode recaps you'll have to ride the link over to variety.com. We just wanted to let you know that you can bring your weekends to a comfortable, plague-ridden close once more.

The Undead to Hit the High Seas!

Todd Jepperson

Have you ever woken up one morning and thought to yourself, "You know what I'd really like to do? I'd love to be locked in a 13 story floating tuna can with about 1,000 hungry zombies." No, I'm not talking about a movie here, I mean, yeah, that's been done before, but did you think you could really jump on a boat and sail it straight to hell?

No?

Well, this is awkward.

Anyway, I guess there's this new thing now where all of these cruise lines are booking zombie themed cruises of the damned and it's kind of awesome. Check it out. It kinda started last year when Royal Caribbean International lost their Allure of the Seas cruise liner to the legions of hungry dead in November. The ship sailed for 7 days and spread the infection from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida to Labidee, Haiti and Fallmouth, Jamaica. On-board were a bunch of notables in the zombie world ranging from groups like Zombie Squad, friends of Z&T, including author Jonathan Maberry, makeup artists Shallyn Bodnar and Kelly Smith who both graduated from the Tom Savini Special Makeup Effects school of hard knocks, and even fitness trainer Lisa Johnson so that you could get yourself in run for your life shape.

Some of us missed out on that one, so then comes the Walker Stalker cruise and we were all excited. $750 gets you on board the Norwegian Pearl with your favorite stars from AMC's production of Bob Kirkman's The Walking Dead. This one is a three-day trip from Miami to Nassau with live panels, photo ops, makeup experiences, and all of the food and drink you can stuff in your ravenous gullet. Although you haven't missed the boat yet, all reservations for this one are full already. However, you can jump in on a waitlist just in case there is someone who comes to their better senses and backs out of their spot.

Now's the good news.

We're talking zombies here. Infection. Pestilence. Spreading of pathogens.

It caught on. Now, through a company called LashCon Cruises, zombies are sailing all over the world. Their Euro Zombie Cruise can be booked all the way up until January 1st, 2016 and will be crashing places like Barcelona, Rome, Capri, Southhampton, Paris, and Bruges. Also, the Zombie Island Cruise is scheduled for a March 2016 departure out of Orlando. Details about this one are scarce, but there is a really cool chance to win a "Zombie Edition" 2016 Kia Soul.

From the website:
"Seventeen years ago, the apocalypse occurred, changing life on Earth, forever. The global zombie infestation spread rapidly, overwhelming any attempts by the Center for Disease Control. The undead now populate the earth with an undying hunger for human flesh. We must return to our origins, we must return to Zombie Island

While mindless and concerned only with consumption, these creatures are clever and diligent in their pursuits. Your mission is to destroy all zombies and save the few remaining humans that might aid in your fight. Travel through many lands to rid the world of this new species and try to save the human race.

While on the ship the Captain told us that there might be survivors on an uncharted island, in 3 days we will send a team to check it out, we will report back to the ship of our findings."

So, grab your gear, jump on board, and sail the seven seas with all of this zombie cruise mayhem.

Watcha gonna do brother ?...when the zombies start feeding on you ??

Matt Boiselle

Let's face facts people - there have been an endless parade of soldiers, police, renegades, prisoners....hell, even strippers that have faced off against the legions of the dead in what seems like a futile attempt to squash their uprising, whereas all have seemed to fail to some extent. Now, thanks to a very creative director by the name of Cody Knotts, the zombies have a true match on their rotted hands....only question is....WHAT kind of match will it be ?....Hardcore ?, Lumberjack perhaps,...or maybe a Buried Alive match ?

Mr. Knotts has allowed us here at Zombies and Toys to present to you the trailer for his latest inception - entitled Pro Wrestlers vs. Zombies....yep, you heard it right ! Starring a who's who list of some of the biggest and baddest bashers to ever step in the squared circle - names like Rowdy Roddy Piper, Kurt Angle, Matt Hardy, Shane Douglas & Hacksaw Jim Duggan, the odds now appear clearly stacked against the denizens of the dead. After checking out the trailer, this looks to be an extreme meshing of both the horror and pro wrestling worlds, one that will satisfy even the most picky of fans. A Spring 2014 release is scheduled, with a new trailer to be unleashed upon your orbital units this August, which we will keep firmly atop of, but for now, check out the video above to witness just a taste of the carnage, but beware....this swings like a steel chair towards your melon...but don't duck....EMBRACE it, and feel the pain !!!

Losing Residence? An Editorial on the tenuous present of Capcom’s undead hit.

In 1996, the world shook.  It trembled as a small town called Raccoon City felt the cold icy clutches of the undead.  History was made.  Players had never been so frightened, so unsettled and so terrified by a game as they were when consoles fired up with the doomed STARS team.  From the spooky announcer to the bloodshot eye, Resident Evil (RE) had left its mark forever.

The game pushed blood, gore and guts up a notch.  It brought ferocious enemies to gamers and it put players up against overwhelming odds complete with walking dead and bio-terrors.  The game ignited a whole series of books, toys and even films.  But like all great things, even the evil mechanisms of Umbrella must come to an end.  Resident Evil has suffered some harsh reviews and even harsher gaming failures.

Over the next several posts, we’ll be taking a look at one of the greatest and longest running series in video game history.

Zombies & Toys will look at RE’s brightly lit past and its possibly burned out future.  Feel free to join us and let us know your thoughts - Is Resident Evil is still hungry for brains or is the series falling dead from a headshot!

Zombienite!!

Todd Jepperson

I don't know what you guys do in your free time, but I often find myself running through images in the great WWW to lighten my day. Back in 2010, Taio Cruz released a song called Dynamite that was apparently pretty catchy. I can't say much about the song, because I've never heard it. What I can tell you, though, is that ever since then, I have come across a whole bunch of images that made no damn sense.

However, a couple of weeks ago I met a man who changed all of that. Enter Wes Nelson and the crew at ZombieniteMusic  and their parody video about a fun-loving zombie who somehow landed a few extra brains to throw around and thought, "what the hell, might as well get a few million of my undead buddies and throw a party!"

Finally, someone's explaining it to me in a language I can understand. Check out the video below, and drop on in to Facebook and say hi to our new freinds over at Zombienite Music

And hey, when you find yourself wandering around the smoking remains of all civilization as a hungry, undead fiend, think back to this moment and remember that the end of the world doesn't have to mean the end of your fun. Throw a brain up in the air and rock your afterlife.

Ghastly Crud Zombies: The Final Days!

Todd Jepperson

The Ghastlycrud Zombies - when you mix a little bit of Edward Gorey with some extra chunky George Romero, you end up with a children's alphabet book that you probably shouldn't read to children.

Martin Whitmore has created a beautifully (if disturbingly) illustrated alphabet book featuring everyone's favorite undead monstrosities. The Kickstarter is over two-thirds of the way funded, and there are 5 days left for you to join in on the campaign. The rewards for contributing include signed copies of the book with doodles drawn inside by the artist, original Ghastlycrud artwork, custom illustrations, and even decommissioned grenades, painted by the artist with cartoon zombie faces! If that isn't tempting, then maybe you're in the wrong place... And as an added bonus, if the campaign hits $5000, everyone at the $44 level and above will get a decapitated Ghastlycrud zombie head magnet. ...for sticking those target practice bullseyes to the refrigerator.

So, get on over to the Kickstarter campaign, and join us in getting this project backed so we can bring this book to horrible, horrible un-life!

Serious Sam 3 Review

David Brown

I love zombies, if I didn't I would be writing for this great site.  I have come to expect a lot of games nowadays that do justice to zombies and nothing else.  I do however like to coast into the world of shooters from time to time as I love the action that they bring, and what better game to do that then one that has enemies that are as mindless and unforgiving as zombies.

As the picture above shows, that game is Serious Sam 3:BFE for the Xbox 360 and Playstation Network.  Action fans, FPS fans and PC gamers have known of the Serious Sam franchise for a while and this iteration does the series justice. The synopsis for the game is simple:

Serious Sam 3: BFE is a glorious throwback to the golden age of first-person shooters where men were men, cover was for amateurs, and pulling the trigger made things go boom. Brutally fast-paced action, massive shootouts, and thrilling cooperative play make for the most explosive Serious Sam game ever! Contains the full single-player and cooperative campaign modes.

This is a game that will keep you on your toes and hone your senses for the upcoming zombie apocalypse.  Many of your actions will trigger hoardes of enemies to descend on you.  I use hoard lightly as you will be encountering minitaurs, headless gunners and even kamikaze enemies with bombs for hands.  The action is fast paced and you will have to stay focused if you want to survive.

The controls in Serious Sam 3:BFE are very tight and I never found lag at all.  I was able to switch weapons quickly and easily in battle and only died because of my slow reflexes and not from terrible controls.

The sound is pretty good with enough explosions and wails to have you on edge for a majority of the game.  The weapons in this game are varied and each handles differently so you can always have something that works for your particular situation.

My only complaint about the game is that it takes a while to load. In a game where you will die often it is not fun to have to wait 10-15 seconds to reload.  This minor complaint aside this is a fun game.

There may not be zombies, but there are plenty of ghouls and demons to keep you busy for hours. If you don't want to think of this as a game, simply think of it as a zombie reflex training program.  I really like this game and recommend it to anyone who wants a fast paced game with lots of blood and explosions.  Pick up your copy today.

Prince Charming had better have a solid contingency plan in place, because his princesses have all come down with something terrible. His good looks and sweet words are wasted on these lovelies, who now only want him for his braaiiins. For your viewing pleasure, we present these undead beauties as only Deviantart’s “Clocktowerman” could create.

Omega Zombie Review

David Brown

Omega Zombie follows Penny Goodfellow through a series of tragic events. She has found her parents murdered by a vampire and has been killed herself. Brought back to life, she has a chance to enact revenge on the one that took everything from her.

Omega Zombie is one of those books that can be read in one sitting, but that doesn't mean that it is bad. I would say that it takes its short 60 pages and fills them with enough blood, drama, gore and action to keep you interested the whole way through. This is a book that you will not want to put down once you have begun it.

The writing is very good and we get a good dose of character development along the way. We feel for Penny and what she is going through and care what happens to her. The narrative is accentuated by stunning visuals reminiscent of great graphic novels. The black and white visuals go far in making this a dark and gritty story.

When it is all said and done, you will be left satisfied and will feel closure. Omega Zombie is published by Zilyon Publishing and is available now. Shamble on over to Amazon, Smashwords or your nearest bookstore and pick this up today.

ParaNorman: Going For The Gold

The Walking Dead Episode 1 Review

David Brown
Many of us have had our ups and downs with The Walking Dead.  We have marveled at the greatness that is the graphic novels.  We have been there through the ups and downs of the television series, now going into it's third season.  We have even listen with intrigue to the long tale of the governor.  Well TellTale games has done us the honor of releasing a video game to flesh out even more of a story in The Walking Dead universe.

The Walking Dead: Episode 1 "A New Day" is available now via Xbox Live, Playstation Network and also via Steam on PC and MAC.   The game will set you back $24.99 via Steam for a season pass, 400 points on XBox Live for the First Episode and $5.00 on Playstation Network for each episode or $20 for the whole season.  As I said this is just the first episode of the game, so we can expect to see 4 more to come out in the next few months.

TellTale is following in the tradition of their previous games including Sam & Max and Jurrasic Park by presenting The Walking Dead: Episode 1 as a point and click adventure game.  At first I have to admit that I was a little nervous to see how this would play out, but I can assure you first and foremost that this is the ultimate control style for this type of game.  The game starts out with the player taking the role of Lee a man who is being taken to prison for reasons unknown to us at first.  He is talking with the deputy and this is where you start to see the way that the gameplay takes place.  At many points during conversation you will be able to choose conversation paths.  Each path will affect the outcome for the rest of the game.

There are many times during the game where you have the option to say a certain thing or side with a certain character and each option certainly holds weight.  For the first time in a long time I feel that all of my choices will actually affect the story as a whole. Back to the story though, we see the conversation between Lee and the Sheriff cut short as they swerve to avoid a walker and Lee is knocked unconcious.  I will leave the rest of the story for you to explore yourselves. I would now like to look at the gameplay and the overall fun factor.

I am not understating when I say that this game makes you feel like you are in The Walking Dead universe. The art style mimics the graphic novels perfectly so you feel like you are playing through another issue.  With the player taking the role of Lee we see a different spin on the Walking Dead universe. No longer are we following the cop who has the training. We are following a very ragtag group of people who are thrown into a walking nightmare. You will battle zombies, you will forge relationships and people will die.  I won't say who but just know that there is everything to lose in this game.

One of the best things I found was that everything moves at a brisk pace. Episode 1 clocks in at around 4 hours but you feel like you are enjoying every minute. Being an adventure game there are a few puzzles scattered throughout, but you definitely can solve everything with a little common sense.  If I had to have one criticism it is that my setup made my cursor a little hard to see in some situations, but I still was able to play without issue.  The characters are voiced perfectly and everything just feels like The Walking Dead.

If you are a fan of The Walking Dead, you owe it to yourself to play this game.  You will learn more about the universe of the series and maybe even see a few familiar faces. As I said earlier, this isa avalable now via XBox Live, Playstation Network and Steam.  Shamble on out and pick this game up as I am giving The Walking Dead: Episode 1 a must play 10 out of 10.

Zombies vs. Cheerleaders Vol. 1

Matt Boiselle The unholy union has finally come to light in a comic book format that is sure to entertain everyone from the casual to the most hardcore of zombie fans. What better to see than a group of flesh-craving undead freaks stalking a bevy of bodacious, perky, scantily-clad cheerleaders ?

In Zombies vs. Cheerleaders Vol.1, created by Steven l. Frank, we are treated to lots of skin and gore that will not only portray some of these curvy pep-squadders as innocent victims, but will turn the perceived notion of the dainty, helpless women upside down as they kick ass and never look back in an endless blitz of in-your-face zombie slaughter.

Volume 1 is not one lone story, but a collection of shorts that will rival any B-movie that any of us have ever seen before. The colors seemingly jump off of the pages into your lap, the artwork is second to none, and the short story lines are exceptional to dive into without getting hung up in length. A small word of caution however; this comic, with its graphic nature and suggestive sense of humor, might not necessarily be aimed towards the younger crowd. Well, now that the morality disclaimer has been presented in its short version, get yourself online and search out this comic !! If you love zombies and those buxom beauties that have managed to entertain ( and sometimes annoy) us all to no end, I can say that you will not be disappointed with this series.
