Abomination Nursery - presented by The Undead Bazaar

The Undead Bazaar begins with Abomination Nursery's Armgardt Richter Rose. For updates and links throughout the month, make sure to keep an eye on The Undead Bazaar main page.

Abomination Nursery is another one of those names that should sound familiar to readers of Zombies & Toys. We featured Abomination Nursery and their undead babies about a year ago and we are thrilled to have them back. The brand Abomination Nursery was spawned by artist Armgardt Richter Rose in 2006 by a desire to turn thrift store treasures into horror art.

The website, abominationnursery.com, was launched in November of 2008 after giving a doll to a friend as a birthday gift. “The first porcelain doll on the site, Orianna Chantal, is that doll. It was so fun making that doll that I had to keep going.”

So, what has changed, stayed the same, and in the future for Abomination Nursery? ARR informs us that although the finished doll numbers have gone down, there is still plenty in the pipeline. “I’ve been collecting many dolls and doll parts from flea markets and thrift stores and am currently working on a couple different projects right now”, ARR shares. “For the future, I’m looking to change up the website and add a merchandise section where people can get some Abomination Nursery stuff.”

You were first featured on ZT because your works were referred to as "zombie babies". Is that the effect you are going for or is it just a coincidence? As an artist, does that label bother you if it was not the interpretation you intended for your work?
"I started off just wanting to make horror art that was interesting to view. I was never aiming to make realistic mutilated babies. I started referring to my dolls as zombies to help people keep them in the realm of fiction. Most, if not all, of my creations have open eyes, and some are even smiling, so they don’t look dead, they look undead. I’m not bothered by anyone’s interpretation, some people have called them ‘cute’."

With your creations being part doll, part sculpture, what do you call them?
"Even though it seems a little ‘girly’, I usually call them dolls or babies. The porcelain dolls aren’t really babies though, and neither are things like the ‘Macabre Candelabra’. When referring to any of it, I just call it art."

You have a warning on your website; are there people that seriously get that offended? Any interesting stories?
"I put the warning up as a way to take some responsibility for the macabre art I make. Horror fans aren’t really bothered by fake blood ‘n guts, but for those that are, I just wanted to give them a heads up. I have received some nasty e-mails from people letting me know their dislike for my art and giving me some advice on how I can better use my talents. I still have yet to make realistic “reborn babies” or “faeries”."

Armgardt Richter Rose can be reached at arr@abominationnursery.com for those interested in purchasing one of these “dolls”. If you have admired the Zombies & Toys logo feel free to contact Armgardt for your own commissioned piece, “If it sounds like fun, I’m in!” And to hold you over until Abomination Nursery’s merchandise store is up and running, stop by and see what’s available by ARR in the Zombie Toy Store.

And now for some Zombies & Toys staple questions:

Favorite zombie book, game, or movie?
"I’m constantly being told to read Walking Dead so I should probably do that soon. It better live up to the hype. Also, since I’m a board game geek, I like Last Night on Earth. It’s a zombie board game that plays like a B movie."

If you were bitten, would you want shot or would you want left alone to change?
"Although looking like a zombie would be awesome, I don’t like to be a burden, so just shoot me."

If we made a toy of you, would you be a zombie or a survivor? What accessories would you come with?
"Definitely a zombie. Besides kung-fu zombie grip, I’d have removable guts and real shambling action!"
For your chance to win some great Abomination Nursery items including an undead doll, make sure to enter the Abomination Nursery contest!

Updates and Contest News

First, please allow me to apologize for the lack of updates. Zombies & Toys readers who have been around for a while should already know that a lack of updates does not equal lack of work. In fact, we've been busier than ever!

Next month marks our first ever Undead Bazaar. You can expect to discover at least two new sources each week for zombie-inspired art and crafts. Even better will be your chance to take these fine items home! The majority of artists you will be learning about are also giving away some of their great items. We have zombie coloring books, zombie dolls, zombie sculptures, zombie pins, zombie shirts, zombie photo prints, and Zombies & Toys swag all up for the taking! There will be more than 20 prize packages available!

The Undead Bazaar begins next weekend!

Ending next Friday, however, is our contest for copies of the excellent game, Plants vs Zombies. In addition to several copies of the game, PopCap Games is also giving away some great swag. Entering the contest could not be easier. Simply head over to the Plants vs Zombies website and create a free zombatar. Once it's complete, email your zombatar along with your name and address to pvz@zombiesandtoys.com.

Don't forget, one copy of the game will be given to Facebook fans. All you need to do for your chance to win the Facebook copy is change your avatar to your zombatar. One winner will be selected from every fan who has a zombatar as their profile picture. I encourage everyone to enter both contests for your chance to win.

Vote for Your Favorite Zombie

AMC is running a poll asking you to vote for the movie that has spawned the best zombies. You cast your votes and see if your selections are the majority winners. This fun way to voice your opinion launches with these two contenders:

Night of the Living Dead (1968)

Planet Terror (2007)

To me, this one's a no-brainer! The fun only begins with those two. But go cast your vote and let your voice be heard!

Zombie Avatars For XBox

This month on XBox Live, you will find a running theme we should all be happy about. Realm of the Undead brings us zombie games, movies, themes, and avatars. While the ability to change your actual avatar to a zombie would be great, we have to settle for a T Shirt that says "Zombie Lover".

You can, however, purchase a little zombie friend. He climbs up from the ground and shuffles around until lunging for your avatar. Of course, he misses and falls at which time your avatar jumps over him and laughs.

The culmination of this month's zombie fiesta is the availability of George Romero's Survival of the Dead! As an exclusive to XBox Live members, Survival of the Dead will be available for download sometime at the end of this month.

Zombie Turtles are Dangerous

Who says ninja turtles are the most dangerous kind? Well... my son probably. But he hasn't seen this magnificent painting by Alexander Landa. Appropriately titled, "Zombie Turtles are Dangerous", it features the most fearsome of forest creatures chasing after its prey. Poor guy, as if a live turtle isn't slow enough. Landa shares that he first "...drew it with pencils and then did some colors in photoshop."

To see more of Alexander Landa's work, you can visit his blog, Darktoons. There is also a fan site on Facebook. He has a nice variety of images so make sure to check him out.

Undead Animal Art

While this may not necessarily be zombie news, it is interesting and should appeal to many readers. Our friends at youbentmywookie.com have an amazing feature and interview with artist, Lisa Black. Lisa creates pieces of art from taxidermy animals and machine parts. The finished product, to me, looks like a cyberpunk animal.

Here's a little taste, but I recommend you head over to youbentmywookie.com and enjoy the interview and photos in their entirety.

"I try to create my work as realistically and originally as possible. Using taxidermy allows me to create my work as closely to my original idea as possible."

Plants vs Zombies Plushes

The timing cannot be any better. This month's contest prizes include several copies of the insanely-addictive Plants vs Zombies by PopCap Games. We also announced recently that May will bring you our first Undead Bazaar, featuring different zombie artists.

Arixystix Creations recently posted images of her Plants vs Zombies Plushies and the masses are going nuts! These guys are cute, well-crafted, and another example of how this amazing game is influencing people. Sadly, her plushies are not for sale. But it's only a matter of time before someone or PopCap themselves begin to make more collectibles based on the game.
